High-rise apartments for birds

The photo was taken in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, Ireland and shows a wall of artificial nests. What a great idea! I don’t know how many little birds make use of these but I hope some do. But then, maybe we’re just creating generations of lazy birds who won’t know how to build their own nests. But if there are no trees around, then it probably is a good idea. Nothing is ever black and white, is it?

I do hope they use them. It would be very disappointing if they didn't.

I guess you could say the same about feeding them. But I’d rather feed them and make them lazy. PS: just saw sad news from your homeland: Barry Humphries passed away.

@JudyEv — I’ve been Aussie-reading a lot lately. I saw that Fr. Bob Maguire passed away and he was referred to as a “Larrikin priest” in Australia, so I had to go find out what that meant. I thought initially it was some little-known indigenous tribe. No.

Yes, he was 89. I thought I might write about him but then thought probably no-one, apart from yourself, would know of him. But I shouldn't be presuming that.

@FourWalls Fr. Maguire was a great character. So you found what 'larrikin' meant? lol

Must be nice for the birds to have a ready made home. All they have to do is decorate it..

@JudyEv They sometimes like shiny or colorful items to put in their nests.

@snowy22315 We had a couple of crows that would steal Vince's golf balls if he started hitting them up and down the paddock.

Well you do have a point but hopefully birds have an instinct about building nests.

Often birds build nests in low lying brush if there aren't that many predators.

If there are no available trees, then perhaps they'll be glad of these boxes.

On the outskirts of Springfield, Missouri, there is a wall of nesting boxes built on a barn. During the Spring, Pretty and I stop and watch different types of swallows and sparrows nesting there. I like the individual houses on the wall in your photo better and hope birds do use those houses.

@JudyEv No, I don't know what bug houses are. We see bug zappers on the walls of some houses to keep mosquitos and other flying insect populations down.

@DaddyEvil They are places for insects to live in. I'm written about them. I like a good excuse for a new discussion.

There were some 'insect hotels' or 'bug houses' there too. Have you seen those?

In cities, I think it is a good idea as there seems to be a lack of good habitat for them. On same of the building here there are bat boxes. I have a soft spot for bats

I have to admit bats make my flesh creep a bit. I think it's only because I have so little knowledge or experience of them. There were dozens in Cairns when we were there and I was always worried they would poop on me!

Birds still build nests inside the birdhouses. I wonder how many birds will nest on those yard lights on the building behind.

And may be Future Robotic Birds? Or 24th Century Human-Bird Hybrids? I feel such ideas develop when we realize that we as humans have encroached too much into the animals' habitats. So then such ideas are enacted and put into practice. So let us see how well this idea works.

@JudyEv Yes but there should be people assigned to keep a track on all these new features. If untracked, one cannot know how successful these are.

I think it's a viable solution in urban settings, given that we cut down all the trees that birds would need for nesting. This allows birds to still thrive in urban settings. Otherwise, many birds would disappear from our cities and towns!

It's a great idea. As you say, sometimes there aren't too many trees around for birds to build their nests in.

I'd be interested to know how many are used. Normally I believe birds (apart from some that like communal living such as sparrows, swallows and house martins) don't like to be too close to others of the same species, and generally not too close to any others either although the verdict on this seems to be a bit vague (I recently asked for advice on this, for example could you mount two nest boxes in one tree? And was told it might be acceptable, if they were aimed at different types of birds and were in different positions, for example one low down on the trunk, one higher up in the branches). So I wonder what the bids make of this set-up?

@JudyEv Maybe, but they look very unlike the kind of places swallows normally nest. They often nest inside buildings just where the walls meet the roof. There's also a colony of them here that nest on the girders underneath a road bridge.

Good points. Creatures have their own ideas about what's acceptable and what isn't. I think our son mentioned 'swallows' so perhaps that's the target group here.
