Superstitions

Kenya

I have grown up in Africa , the land of all sorts of superstitions . I know in other part of the world maybe there's a better way of calling it. Common superstitions that I have heard are : 1. When an owl sings at night near your house it's a bad omen. 2. People fear black cats saying they belong to witches and wizards. 3.when you whistle being a lady you will never get married. What other superstitions have you heard?

I always owned black cats until I was diagnosed as allergic to furbabies. My cats were always very intelligent and understood what I said... They didn't always mind when I told them something but they understood me.

Two of those I never heard of the one with the owl and the lady. The middle one is more from back during the witch trials many people might be scared of them more so for bad luck than they do of magic.

Even they say if you sit with your legs crossed as a lady you will never get married

@ShyBear88 yes it depends with the geographic location and when you can to take a closer look, superstitions were made to instill some kind of behavior or morals . As for me I like or sometime always find my self sitted with legs crossed

In Italy we also have many superstitions, about the owl we have the same. - Opening an umbrella inside a house brings bad luck - If you break a mirror you have 7 unlucky years - Never put a hat on a bed, this means someone is going to die in the house

Breaking a mirror means seven years of bad luck and the number 13 means bad luck since Jesus Christ had His last supper with his 12 disciples before he was arrested and tried for his alleged crimes against humanity.

@Laurakemunto I have heard the broken mirror saying from a comic book of the Flash that was published in the 1970s when his enemy Mirror Master used that line when his mirrors were broken in battle against his enemy.

They do exist all over the world but I guess they were used as teaching models by instilling fear to people.

Yes, we have lots of superstitions here in India too. 1. If someone sneezes it's not considered good for others. You should not start any new work and should wait for at least 5 mins. 2. If a black cat crosses your path it is considered a misfortune.
