The sea stack Dun Briste

I wrote before about Dun Briste, the sea stack just off Downpatrick Head in Ireland. It is 63 metres long and 23 wide. Dun Briste means ‘broken fort’. I realised I didn’t have a photo of it that showed it on its own in all its glory but Vince has very kindly given me permission to use his. Notice the colourful rock stratas. It’s a safe haven for nesting birds too. I wonder if more of the cliffs will one day break away and become sea stacks. I’m away all day as we’re having a day in Dublin. I must remember to take my camera. I’ll check in again this evening hopefully.

I wonder if one day it will wash away too. I guess it will one day but probably not for thousands of years.

It will happen eventually. The sea will corrode the base and those rocks will become sea stacks.

I hope you and Vince have a good time in Dublin! And some of the strata looks like it was built of bricks... Very interesting!

@JudyEv Yeah, it could easily be blocks like I played with as a kid.

The layers are nicely placed, aren't they? Very tidy. Maybe it's a baby giant's building blocks.

I should have stuck with him when he went off to one side. I didn't think about it being hidden behind the mainland.

@snowy22315 We went through some of Northern Ireland some years ago. I'm afraid the main memory is of the razor wire around the police stations.

The countryside is just beautiful. This side of the country is more rugged than some of it.

@JudyEv Silly me but I thought English was the language that the Irish spoke.

Dun Briste is Irish. Many of the signs here are in both Irish and English.

It's probably an archeologists dream if only they could access those layers of history.

I guess there is someone somewhere who might be stupid enough to do that. Unless they had the wind in the right direction, they could easily be dashed against the rocks.

Hope you enjoy Dublin. I have never been - the time we were due to go we had to give it a miss as we spent too long at the seaside and at Newgrange.

It does indeed. The layers look very carefully planned with a little green and yellow icing drizzled over the top.

I wonder what is in each layer? Probably some evidence of ancient plants or animals.

I guess so. It has taken hundreds of years for those layers to be laid down.
