We Drove to Bay City Today

Jay and I are preparing to build a new home. We took a drive to Bay City today, to see house layouts at Menard's and Home Depot. We also stopped in Au Gres, to get floor plans from Bernard's Building Center. I wasn't very excited about building a house, but it's starting to appeal to me. Remodeling wasn't too bad, the difference in the house was like day and night! So this will be similar, except working from the foundation up to the roof. This is a venture that I never imagined we would attempt. Yes, I will be assisting and just following instructions as we go. I built a dog house one time, years back. That's my total experience with constructing anything! Photo: Mine

Building a home from the foundation up sounds very intimidating, but so exciting at the same time! I can imagine when it is done it will be very rewarding.

Jay worked at a building center for 20 years, doing estimates for building homes and garages.

Wow. Way way back when, daughter was a toddler then, we lived in a ramshackle cabin in northern Idaho. We did all manner of building projects then. Age is beating us up now so not much of those projects for us. I wish you well as you head into this new adventure.

A house won't be so much different to a dog-house, just somewhat bigger.

@JudyEv You know what a 'cat house' means? When my hubby was small one of his uncles built a little house to go on a wagon for his cat. Hubby's Mom said to little hubby "Don't you go around telling people you have a cat house!?" Little hubby did not understand the commotion of course.

@sallypup I had to look it up. I didn't know that meaning for 'cat house' before.

Now, Jay tells me that he will be hiring a five man work crew. That's a big relief!

Ooh that's exciting! Will you actually be physically putting it up yourselves? Often when people say they are self-building they mean they have hired the workers themselves, rather than buying a ready-built house.

Sounds like a lot of hard work. Can you buy blueprints from the centre, indeed are there what can only be called 'flat pack' houses building kits that have everything you need to build your house

We have a building center that sells house packages. As you said, everything is included to build a certain style home that we've selected. The foundation has to be professionally laid. Also, the roof has to be done by professionals.

It will be a very hard project you got there because you must have to consider many things like the ground on how you can install the water and electricity
