An Unfortunate Visit

So I had an appointment to get an ultrasound for my heart today, and then to get set up with a holter monitor so they can track my heart's rhythms (I'm fine. This is an overreaction by a well meaning doctor.) About an hour into the ultrasound they set up the IV for contrast. It was about 30 seconds before I felt a thickening in my throat, and my eyes began to burn. After I started coughing, I couldn't open my eyes because the burning was so bad. They disengaged the IV, and went to get the cardiologist. He explained why I had an adverse reaction (I can't remember his explanation), but he said it was not an allergic reaction. The doctor told me he wanted to keep me there for observation until 5pm so they sent someone to the floor I was on to set me up with the holter monitor. The longer I was there the worse I felt. I am SO glad to be home. I feel fine now.

Thankful that the reaction did not get worse than what you had. And it's good that the team stopped the infusion and the tests. Hope you've recovered well.

I wonder if some doctors know what they are doing.

What was it if not an allergic reaction?

He said it had something to do with the small amount of nitrogen we breathe in, and some people when breathing a small bit of nitrogen and getting an IV of that stuff has an adverse reaction. It's not an allergy though. He made me go lay in the Nuclear room. Indeed, I went home and looked up allergic reactions to that stuff and list of allergic reactions were none I had experienced.

Yes, it does. And I got to take that monitor off a couple of hours ago so I am very relieved.

Yeah, I’m wearing the monitor right now. The monitor doesn’t say on the screen or anything, but yesterday my BP was only a tiny bit high. Which isn’t bad considering how stressed I was.

Yeah, I assumed an allergic reaction too. He’s a good cardiologist, but just to double check what he said, when I got home I got online and it wasn’t listed as an allergic reaction there either. I guess it’s just one of those things.
