Don't.......

When you think about it. When you see it. When you have a moment of " why is this child doing that"? My job is to run the front of the store, most days, to make sure the customer gets fast service with a smile. That means my cashiers are in good spirits. One cashier came to work and immediately the store manager and I knew something was going on, I was asked to find out the problem, so about an hour later I pulled this young lady aside, in the office, and asked. What she said broke my heart. She is extremely over weight, she had beautiful light brown hair and dressed nicely that suited her weight. In a week she had bright pink hair, a nose ring, in leggings with cut off overalls on over those and her work shirt. She had asked for bandaids and was given several. I got her in private and I asked was she okay, she was sweating but the air was on and the store was cool. She busted out crying and told me she hated herself. I asked why she needed bandaids, she told me she cuts herself with her finger nails. She has anxiety and the meds aren't working, actually she was in a full blown anxiety attack and I got her through it, she was on her period and thought it was all over her clothes but I assured her it wasn't. I asked if she wanted to try stay at work or go home, she chose to go home but cried saying she didn't want to be put back in the hospital. She calmed down and waiting in the office for her mom. When her mom came the manager and I talked to her finding out she has been in the hospital 4 times. Seems she is bullied at school. We asked if she wanted her to be off for a week or two, the mom said yes to two weeks. This got me to thinking about how we abuse ourselves. Some people cut themselves. Some people use food for comfort. Some people use sex to feel loved. Some people use drugs to forget. Some people use alcohol to numb problems. Some people, uh-hmm, become workaholics. Some of us do a combination of the above. I understand, I've been there before. The answer to problems as I see it, now, is to not run away or hurt ourselves but to face our fear of whatever is bothering us. I know it sounds easy, it's not. Fighting evil never is but it's worth it in the end. I hope y'all have a wonderful day!

I am very glad the young girl had you to speak with her when she obviously needed you. My heart hurts for the young lady, and her undoubtedly worried sick mother.

I wish I could tell people to stand up for themselves and it would stop.

I am glad you and the manager could spot the changes and could really care about what was under the surface. Hope she gets some help that works.

Poor girl. I used to cut myself for a few years as a teen. I have a lot of scars on my arms.

@andriaperry antidepressants and knowing someday I wanted children and didn’t want them looking at my scars and having to explain to them what I did.

Thank goodness you were there to talk her through her problem today... Those type of problems only seem to escalate and become worse. I hope the rest of your day turns out well.

I am glad she was willing to talk to you. Hopefully she gets some more help. There is nothing wrong with doing that. They maybe need to home school her also if that is possible

You are so right. In one way or another, most people abuse themselves in some way without realizing that they are even doing that. I had to face mine, and it wasn't easy--but like you said, you've been there before and most of us have. What a wonderful post, to remind us all that everyone struggles with these things. The best thing we can do is just what you did--be kind. You are a good lady.

@andriaperry Oftentimes, those who have suffered heartbreaks of some kind are very kind to others. You did very well handling it all, it seems she needs help and hopefully she is getting that now.

Yes, people have a variety of unhealthy coping methods for sure. The young cashier is certainly struggling, and I hope she gets the help she needs.
