Making a Change

Since 2016, I have been trying to lose weight. I started with the Whole30 plan and switched to Paleo in the second year. I lost a total of 80 pounds until my knee replacement surgery in 2020. Since then, I gained back half the weight.
In 2015 I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. That means I have an infusion at the hospital every six weeks. It started out as eight weeks, but the knee surgery changed the timing. Every six months they do a bloodwork panel and a full panel every year. Last week was the full panel. Seven vials of blood before the infusion.
My bloodwork always came back good. Not this time. My numbers indicated I am pre-diabetic. Really not happy about that. And to make matters worse, my kidney numbers weren't good either. So, there will be changes. I do not want diabetes and I don't want to worry about dialysis in the future. At least it's early enough that I can make those changes and get my numbers back where they belong.
I'm up over 200 pounds again. Really not happy. I know I've been eating things I shouldn't. That all stops now. It should be an easy thing to do. I'll get back into the Paleo diet. I never got off of it, but I did waver a bit, which is why my weight is up. So, the sugar goes, and so does the bread. I don't eat a lot of bread. I keep it to the Ezekiel bread, but even that will be off the menu from now on. I was strict with myself before, I can do so again. I will not allow diabetes or kidney problems to dictate my life. My numbers will be back to normal by the next panel in six months.
Have you found a need to make changes in your life? Thanks for reading. The image belongs to me.

I was diagnoses as pre-diabetic over ten years ago and have kept my numbers down since then... We check my glucose once a day just to be sure.

That was interesting, though I don't believe in evolution or those fantastic numbers of years he talked about. What I got from it was that starch is okay. I eat potatoes. I won't be giving it up. Only sugar again and bread. I'm finding I don't like bread anyway, so it's not a big problem giving it up.

@just4him Oh, I'm sorry... You talked about the paleo diet so I thought you meant way back when...

Good for you, Valerie! I know you can do it, and more importantly, you know you can do it. Getting rid of the bread will help a lot, and it is so hard for me to do that. I always have to remind myself that my two favorites, pasta and bread, turn right to sugar.
I’ve noticed I’ve really gotten bad at including vegetables into my diet, and that used to really help my weight loss. In the past few months I’ve lost 12 pounds, and I’m hoping to continue it.

Good for you losing those 12 pounds. I'm finally back at my starting weight for this year, but it's still higher than I want to be.
I started limiting my bread before I started on Whole30. When I started it, it was easy to cut it out completely. The pasta was hard at first, but I found ways around it. Spaghetti squash makes a great tuna casserole and anything pasta related and it's good for you. It's a vegetable. I also use veggie pasta. Since switching to Paleo, I found almond flour, Monk fruit, Swerve, and Stevia. Though I don't use Stevia much anymore. All are zero calories. By changing key ingredients in recipes to those compatible with Paleo, I can eat well and know I'm eating healthy. If I keep my chocolate to Dark Chocolate, I'm doing my heart a favor and can satisfy the chocolate craving.

I've been on the Paleo diet for five years. It's what works best for losing weight. Nothing else was working for me.
I looked at DASH this morning when I looked at ways to improve my kidneys. That one looks good. It's not a diet, just a way of eating, and seems a lot like the Paleo plan, except for the grains and dairy products.

I don't eat as many potatoes as I used to, but I won't cut out the bananas. I'm even eating fewer eggs. Though eggs are still my go-to when I don't know what else to eat.
No, I haven't been posting my meals. I haven't kept track of them for a while now.

I think you probably needed this as a wake up call, but you are pretty active now. I am not sure how much more you can do without hurting yourself. One book that is on Amazon now is the Noom book filled with psychological principles of why we overeat, and how we can keep our goals and vision of where we want to be in the forefront of our mind that make those slips and times we are indulging to a minimum. It isn't all about what you eat you know, it is about what triggers us to do as we do, and how we can do it differently...Good luck..!

I've looked at Noom. I can't afford it and when I looked at what it entailed, the diet isn't for me. In the last year, I tried what the doctor suggested, the Mediterranean Diet, and gained weight, and tried a vegetarian diet and gained weight. Paleo always worked for me, so I'm back at that one 100%.
Thank you.

@just4him You don't have to be doing Noom to benefit from the book. It is to learn how to change your relationship with food, and how to get the upper hand in the battle YW.

I am diabetic since last 10 or more years and have been taking medicines since then. I avoid sweets and try to workout as much as I can which keeps my blood sugar level maintained. Yes you need to walk alot if you don't want to be diabetic. I am thankful that my kidneys are fine and have not affected with the diabetes.

You can do it. I lost weight because of being told I was pre diabetic. I have kept it mostly off since then thankfully

I don't do either fast food or canned foods. Everything I make is from scratch with fresh or frozen vegetables. I eat mostly fish. Meat is rare.
