A few days on my own

My brother-in-law lost a grandson to a brain tumour. The little boy was about eight when he died. His twin brothers were only very young when he died. I’m not sure what memories they have of him. The twins are now about 19 and one is riding his bike across most of Australia (Perth to Melbourne) to raise funds for a children’s cancer charity. The distance is 3,418 kms (2,124 miles). However, he has had some hassles with punctures and breakdowns so tomorrow Vince and his brother are heading off to take spare parts and help him on his way again. It will take over a day for them to reach him. They will follow him for the best part of a day then head home again. The distance is a challenge for starters but crossing the Nullarbor Plain increases the difficulties. There are roadhouses every several hundred miles but no water in between so he is carrying almost all his own supplies. So I will have a blissful 3 or 4 days on my own. I need to think up something nice to do that I wouldn’t normally do. The photo shows the barrenness of the Nullarbor and the part of the road that goes for 146.6 kms (91.1 miles) without a bend.

I am sure you will find something to do. I cannot believe that a road exist 146.6 km. long without a bend.

@JudyEv - We drove in the California desert, so we have experienced. Italy is 1.185 km north to south and 381 km east to west, but I think there is not a single road with no bend for kilometers. Switzerland is a very small country, but we have the longest tunnel in the world: Gotthard Base Tunnel 57 Km long. My nightmare when we have to go from south to north.

One of our Singaporean friends couldn't get her around our distances so we used to say from this town to that was two Singapores or whatever. I found that Switzerland is 350 kms east to west and 220 kms north to south so I can understand it's hard for you to imagine.

@LadyDuck Oh wow, that is a very long tunnel indeed. I guess there are places where you can get to one side to stop for a while if you need to.

146.6 kms without a bend... yeah, I guess if there's nothing in the way, why bend the road? Hmmm. What to do on your own? You could go out to some honky tonk, get roaring drunk and pick up a couple sailors... Or, maybe not. There's always the rearrange the furniture or Vince's sock drawer option... Cook something you like that he doesn't care for. Enjoy the solitude.

Now, you see, that’s the difference in logic and US government thinking. The government would make the road curvy, and spend a few billion dollars to make artificial hills.

@FourWalls @BarBaraPrz 'I guess if there's nothing in the way, why bend the road?' You know if the road is long enough, you eventually have to bend it to compensate for the curvature of the Earth!

I might start sorting out photos. I can't believe I'd get them all sorted but I'd be able to make a hole in them - so to speak.

Oh, WOW! I hope the rest of his ride goes smoother for him and he makes it okay. I'm trying to think of something I can suggest for your "me" time but can't think of anything... I hope you come up with something interesting and fun to do.

@JudyEv If that's what you REALLY want to do, then I don't see a problem with it. (I was thinking more about you going to visit friends you haven't seen in a long time, but you do you. )

Yes, and especially so if you're on a bike and hot/cold and aching, not to mention having mechanical problems.

The road looks like it is going on toward eternity. I must applaud him for riding his bike to raise funds for cancer. That's a good and brave man up there. Enjoy your alone time and happy MyLotting.

I’m glad they’re using their sadness for something productive. Many people will do that. I’m glad Vince is going to help, and that’ll give you time to rest and recover from that trip to Ireland!

That looks like really barren territory. I'd be fearful of traveling that road alone. It's great that Vince and his brother are going to help him out. That's quite an endeavor. I wish him a lot of luck. Enjoy your me time.

It is big commitment really. Many people don't like doing the trip in a car - mostly because it's pretty boring and a long way between stops. It was a lot worse of course before the road was sealed.

To keep you busy for 3-4 days try something new you haven't done before You could also try cooking foods you haven't prepared before, or you could also have general cleaning at your house and declutter. Just look around you, you will always find something new to do! Enjoy and have fun!

Decluttering sounds good to me. I find it much easier to declutter if I'm on my own so I might tackle all our photos and try to throw out those we don't really need.

It's really just to rescue the cyclist and get him organised again. A huge amount of driving in a couple of days didn't really appeal to me and if I'd gone it's another one to take food/bed/bedding/etc for.
