I think I might pass on having some cake

I have been going through old photos and what a lot of memories have come up. This is from one of the boy’s birthday parties. Perhaps Damian on the right is turning five but it’s hard to tell how many candles there are and it seems there are three kids all blowing them out. Our other son is in the middle. That’s me in the background, and the top is one I crocheted. The kids are really concentrating on those candles, aren’t they?

I also count 5 candles on the cake. Those kids are surely concentrating on those candles, they can have all the cake.Your top is very pretty.

@JudyEv This is exactly what I thought. I remember that back in time we always used to blow on the candles.

If we gave them all a turn at blowing at the candles, which we often did in those days, the top of the cake might have quite a bit of saliva on it.

That is a nice top. Mom crocheted each of us kids a vest. I loved mine and wore it all the time until I outgrew it. I wouldn't want any of the cake, either. When Pretty was little, there was always a cupcake with a number candle on it for her to blow out and the big cake stayed safe for consumption.

@JudyEv I'm a bit of a germaphobe although not as bad as some I've known... I don't want kid spit on food I'm going to eat.

The cupcake idea was very sensible indeed. I wish we'd thought of that.

I guess the photographer was concentrating on the faces of the boys.

Looking at old photos brings up many memories, but it can also evoke pain as we reflect on the past and our inability to travel back in time. That's a beautiful picture by the way.

It's a lovely moment captured in time. Remember when we were young enough to really believe making a wish while blowing out candles made them come true?

Yes, I do remember. And the kids would get so excited about their birthdays and look forward to it so eagerly.

That's a great crocheted blouse. They're having a blast. Adorable kids too. It's wonderful to reminisce these happy old days.

It looks as if the cake was being cut before the candles were blown out. Are you also a creative baker?

No, not at all. I think I managed but children weren't too fussy back then - probably still aren't.

It was all about the cake and candles at that point. But then I recognised the top as one I'd made.

Thanks. It was probably the middle child's birthday (middle in the photo) as it would have been summer and his birthday is in February.

@Ronrybs Good idea but a half-eaten kid's birthday cake may not go down too well. DE hd the best idea. Have a cupcake with one 'figure' candle - 7, 8, whatever - for blowing, and keep the main cake for eating.
