Frozen World in Winter

I am going through my photos and deciding what stays and what is deleted. I found many amusing snaps I had forgotten I had. I remembered that I had posted a photo of me feeding ducks in the winter in a park. This photo is from another park in the center of Riga, Latvia. When it gets cold as you can see the ground is frozen, snow is along all sides, and the Riga Canal that flows through the city is frozen solid. Whenever we would go walking in the city I would take something along to feed the ducks. As you can see they are used to the winters here and bravely waddle on the frozen canal. They are also joined by pigeons because everyone is hungry.

It's a great picture! It must be enjoyable to be out there, feeding the wildlife.

@RasmaSandra I'm sure they were wonderful. I've always loved forests. Just not to camp in.

It must be hard for birds when the ground is covered in snow and ice.

@JudyEv but they have gotten used to it and when the spring thaws come it is funny to see everyone jumping back in the water and if lucky you can see ducklings among them

@Ronrybs there are also people who sit on the frozen Daugava River that divides the city of Riga and do ice fishing,

Very nice picture. I don’t see why the birds don’t freeze in all the snow and ice.

@RubyHawk I don't know about pigeons but I have read that ducks and geese have a think layering of fat that helps them keep warm

@RasmaSandra I’m sure they do. I suppose all birds and animals have protection from cold weather.

@Jenaisle I was the only one who cared about feeding them in the winter. It always seemed that way,

This photo reminds me so much my native city in Italy. We had snow in winter back in time. I liked to go to the park to feed the ducks and the pigeons always joined the party.

Wintertime can be hard for animals. It's nice that some people are thinking of them.
