Do you have a ‘random nuts and bolts tub’?

Does every household have a ‘random nuts and bolts tub’, or is that just me? I don’t know how it started, but this collection of odd nuts and bolts, screws and nails has been gradually growing over the years. Maybe there are just one or two bolts left over from a pack, or a couple of screws that came as an optional extra with something but were not needed, or even a loose bolt that I’ve seen on the roadside and picked up, plus a few random handles, hinges and the like. But in they all go to await a future use. If I need a set of screws of a specific size to make some shelves, for example, then I will dig out the pack of the appropriate size. But when something breaks or just one thing is needed for some task, my first port of call is often the ‘nuts and bolts tub’. I tip the lot out onto a tray (so I don’t have to spend ages picking each item off the floor afterwards) and have a rummage around, and more often than not I will find something to do the job I need. The latest was a bolt to repair the loppers my partner just managed to break, over-enthusiastically attacking an overgrown shrub. What would I do without it? My "tub" of extra nuts and bolts are actually two jars that are almost full... They're in the cabinet on the back porch.

@Fleura When I was a kid on the farm, dad had a board nailed to the ceiling in a shed. On the board he'd nailed lids to jars and then filled the jars with nails and screws or other small pieces he might need and screwed the jars into their lids. It worked great for him.

I started off with a jar as well. It's a slippery slope

@DaddyEvil That's a nifty idea and I've seen people do similar with spice jars and the like as well. I was too concerned someone would drop a jar!

@Fleura As essential as a decent teapot or a reliable maid.

@xFiacre Funnily enough a decent teapot was going to be one of my next posts!

My parents used to have a drawer in their kitchen dedicated to random nuts, bolts, and screws that lay around unused. It’s good that you actually find use for them!

My husband is picky about those things. Nuts and bolts are separated in glass jars according to the size, if they are for wood or for metal and so on.

@Fleura He bought a special cabinet with very small containers that is on a wall of the garage. I will take a picture of it.

I can understand that - but again, there's a limit to how much space you can devote to jars with just one or two screws in each!

We have one of those and we also have a kitchen drawer which holds bits and pieces of this and that. We're always fossicking in it for something.

We have so many boxes and tubs of piecey parts and miscellaneous items. My husband has the habit of losing things; and then he goes out and buys another of whatever he can't find.

My brother has one of these but I do not. My husband is not very handy so he hires people to do nuts and bolts things. So we don't have any extras hanging around.

Except for the few screws that fall out occasionally from my noggin I have no nuts and bolts in Latvia I was always tripping over or coming up against a lot of things like that plus nails and tools because my hubby was a do it yourself,

Got one here too. And I use it fairly often for many reasons.
