Playing with words

Or collecting words. What have you.
I was visiting by phone with my daughter last night. She asked me if I knew the word comestible or not. I did.
I countered by asking if she knew comfit, and viands.
I have learned viands here from some of my friends, especially in the Philippines. Comfit was a word I learned from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
All of these words are actually in reference to something to eat. Viands, as the dictionary relates, comes from the same Latin words as Victuals and Vittles. It actually refers back to "life" or "to live". When my friends here speak of their viands I mentally think "meat dish". They can correct me if I am wrong.
A comfit is a sweet treat, like dried fruits or nuts or seeds that have a candy coating.
Comestibles are food stuffs. Or used as an adjective, it means "edible".
A little boy of my daughter's acquaintance, not one of her sons, told his mother "The English language has lots of interesting words. I am going to learn some of them this summer".
I am sure he will become a great conversationalist.

Vittles is just the hillbilly way to say victuals.I do not remember when I learned comestible. . . may have been a British murder mystery.

You would enjoy how we entertain ourselves. We also usually spend time going through hymnals and learning what we do not know.

I took two years of Latin and it is amazing how it helps me with my English and vocabulary.

@LadyDuck I took the class to prove I was smarter and better than my older sister.
I was older than you were when I took it, but at that time everything about school felt like a waste of time.

@GardenGerty I now understand how much Latin was useful, but when we started studying Latin at 11 year old we thought it was a boring waste of time.

It is fun for us to challenge one another. My daughter says she gets her love of words from me.

There are certainly some interesting words around. I'm reading a book about Alva and Consuela Vanderbilt and I've learnt a few new words from that. I wouldn't have known the meaning of comfit or comestible although I have heard them.

I think I take my cues from context, and I am usually pretty close to right.

My daughter says she never just looks up one word, as each one she looks up leads her to another.
