A woman pronounced dead wasn't actually dead

An elderly woman in a hospital in Ecuador was pronounced dead after she did not respond to resuscitation. A wake was done for her and five hours into it a sound was coming from the coffin. Turns out the woman was actually alive. She was banging on it from inside, breathing heavily. I wonder... Did the woman not show any signs of life after being pronounced dead and then brought to the funeral home and placed into the coffin? Or was no one paying attention? How did she not suffocate in the coffin? Or was it open the whole time? She is in serious condition. I hope she will be okay.

Sometimes that could happen. I read about something like that several years ago. There is a medical term for such a thing that ti have forgotten.

There are many similar cases. I read about them.

Do people actually die and somehow come back to life? Or are they misdiagnosed somehow?

It's good they did not embalm her. That's a horrible experience. I hope she will be okay too.

Her family went through a lot too. They must’ve been in shock to find she was actually alive.

There is one lady, and I want to say it was Texas, where this has happened to her three times, as she has a condition that drops her vitals really low. Even with this known to family, and the ambulance crew, she has ended up in the morgue three times. Thankfully, no one had tried an autopsy before she's come to. Although, as soon as someone would make a cut, they'd know...

@lovebuglena Probably not. But you know they at least were not charged for embalming!

@lovebuglena Then I'd threaten to sue them for the cost. In that country, they might just give them the money though, to try to mitigate the problem immediately.

@lovebuglena Hmmm. You would have thought it would have been, wouldn't you. By the way, I'm sorry you lost your dad at all. With my mom gone, I try not to worry too much about my dad, but I do. I hope your mom is in good health at least.

That's so crazy, yet we hear of these incidents every now and then. I don't know how in the world that could even happen (they check all the vitals before making it official . . . or at least they're supposed to).

There have been cases where a person might go into a cataleptic state, and seem as if they've passed when in reality they hadn't. Not sure how it was missed.

@lovebuglena There were enough a couple docs series were made about it. Plus featured twice on Untoldstories of the ER.

And obviously in Ecuador they don’t do any kind of embalming process….

@lovebuglena Well, if they did, that woman wouldn't be alive today, as the embalming fluid being pumped through her body would have killed her!

They don’t? But I guess it’s a good thing in this case.
