Old Names Making a Comeback

United States

Lately, I've seen a reemergence of older names (well I consider them old fashioned) making a comeback. My granddaughter had a baby this year and named her daughter Edith. When I think of Edith my mind immediately turns to All In The Family from the 70's. I was shocked that she loved this name so much, but as it turns out, the name fits her perfectly. Recently, I read a young adult book where the main character is 15 and her name is Ruby. My mother's name was Ruby, and growing up the only people with that name were ancient to me (they were probably in their 30's ). Several sites state that many vintage names are popping up again, including Ruth, Lucille, Jane, Dorothy and Maeve to name a few. Have you noticed this trend? The picture is my precious great granddaughter Edith Dawn and her eyes are a beautiful blue. Man, I was finally coming to terms with my realty as a grandmother, and now the "Great" needs to be included. I don't feel old but I must be old with this new title. Maybe, I should pretend I'm called that because I'm so awesome.

As soon as I saw the picture I thought, is that a real baby? She’s just THAT cute. A childhood friend of mine just had a daughter, and named her Opal.

Thank you. Sometimes when I hold her it feels as if I'm holding a beautiful doll. Opal is a pretty name.

Amber, my grandmother had a set of girl twins that were her distant cousins. They were Opal and Ruby. I thought that was pretty cool.

I have noticed this. A friend named her baby boy Alden. Names like Beatrice, Lucy, Archie...etc. They are on the rise again. Cute baby girl in the photo.

Thank you, Archie seems really old to me. It's hard to look at these names through fresh young eyes.

No I haven't really noticed the trend or probably i just never really considered names as modern or old fashioned. I'n having a reborn baby and I'm naming her Sophia Louise, calling her Sophie. I'm not sure if you consider that old fashioned. But I chose the name for what it means.

Your great granddaughter is simply beautiful. My niece gave old names to both her children (Italian names as we are Italian).

@misunderstood_zombie - I have a very common and old Italian name, my niece an old one that was not at all common.

Thank you so much. I guess naming children with names from the past is happening all over.

Your great grandbaby is beautiful. You aren't old... Kids just seem to have children at a younger age now.

What an adorable kidlet in your photo. Yes, working with kids, I have noticed a lot of "old fashioned" names coming back.

@misunderstood_zombie BTW, reading the last part of you post; I figure there must be a t-shirt out there that says, "I'm a great grandma because..."

@misunderstood_zombie When I first looked at the photo, I thought she was one of those So Truly Real babies or whatever they called those dolls.

Not really since the names of celebrities who have children have odd names.

@misunderstood_zombie That is very true since when a celebrity becomes old news, they will do anything to make the news cycle.

This is so true. I guess they want attention so bad they will take from their kid's names.

Edith Dawn is a beautiful name for a baby with beautiful blue eyes. I have not observed a similar resurgence in my country. I was a given a really old Spanish name, and my real nickname is a popular American nickname in the 50's. My name here on MyLot is derived from my first 2 Spanish names.
