Cold days at the endurance ride

I’ve been away again, taking photos at a horse endurance ride. This was the State Championships and was held in Collie which is renowned for being very cold in the winter – cold in West Australian terms, that is. Collie was once a big mining town but there is only one small mine there now and it looks like closing soon. The first riders left at midnight and it was -5 degrees C. Luckily, we can’t take photos in the dark so we were snug in our caravan with a diesel heater till it got light. Every surface was white with frost and we had to scrape the ice off the windscreen before we could out on the track to take photos. We’re home again now and the photos are all up on our website. The next ride is in a fortnight and in the old historic town of York. The photos are mine.

I always like your photos of these events. It just occured to me that I don't recall seeing a black horse among them, am I wrong?

I see what you mean, the horse seems to be more auburn than black .... my first cat was black and was also auburn in the sun. I've read about black horses like in the book Black Beauty but I don't get to see horses that often so I haven't actually seen a black horse myself.

There are a few black horses but they would be in the minority. Even this one looks a bit brown but that's because it has its winter coat. It's very black when it has its shorter summer coat.

@rebelann This one doesn't have a speck of white on her. Black horses are really hard to photograph as black just absorbs the light. It's hard to get any definition to them.

Everything looks so green for the weather to be cold.

They get a lot of rain in that area too and, as it's winter, there is plenty of grass around.

@JudyEv That sounds so weird. During our winters leaves dry and fall from the trees and most grass dries. Our pines and some shrubs stay green all winter but not many. Its mostly bare trees during winter.

@RubyHawk Because we get no snow, winter is our growing season. In summer, it's hot and dry and the paddocks become bare and brown.

I think that -5C is quite cold. It is not weather that I would be out and about in if I could help it. The white horse in the upper right photo looks so beautiful, that is my favorite of all of them.

That sounds pretty cold to be starting the endurance race. At least you were able to be comfortable in the caravan until you had to take the pictures.

@JudyEv once they started ruing I'm sure they warmed up. I guess it would be worse if the weather was very hot and humid

@Marilynda1225 That's true and it's harder to keep the horses' heartbeat, etc, down if it's really hot.

90F is certainly getting on the hot side. I don't like our hot summers but luckily I can usually avoid most of the heat.

Nice photos, do the riders purchase some of your photos?

Yes, luckily the riders love photos of their horses and we make enough to cover fuel, meals, and the cost of the website. Sometimes there's a bit more besides but as long as we cover costs we're happy. The photos are on a website - downunderimages - and purchase is automatic, usually by Paypal.

It was very cold, no matter what temperature below zero is cold. It is hot here and it's not surprising, July is always the hottest month.

@JudyEv - We have been lucky, our winter has been particularly mild. July is not extremely hot for the moment.

We are having a very cold winter this year. We've really been pleased to have the diesel heater in the caravan. We have an A/C unit which we can use if we can plug into electricity but it's on the blink at the moment.

We never get snow so anything below freezing is considered cold here and we all start complaining.

They can but these all have one or two rugs on them. The rugs have varying amounts of insulation in them. They might have summer rugs too to help keep the flies from bothering them. I don't have a photo of a horse with its rug on but I'll take some at the next ride we go to.

-5 C !! Oh it's vety low. Is it a semi desert region? That could be a reason for such a low temperature. We have a place named Churu in the Desert state of India - Rajasthan. It sometimes has minimum falling to - 1 or - 2 C during winters. And it's very hot in the summers. Are the horses comfortable in this much cold?

@JudyEv Now you’re making me long for a hard, sharp freeze of the fields in County Mayo, my breath white in the morning sunshine somewhere south of Westport. And there’ll be horses.

The horses at the ride were breathing fire for a while - or so it seemed.
