Well howdy! I hope those of you who are gainfully employed got today off as well as tomorrow to make it a four-day weekend, similar to Thanksgiving. I also hope you’re getting a break from the heat (as it does appear so on the “heat advisory” map). Of course, you need music for the summer, and here’s one that has been played for many summers, even though it was banned at one point. Eight Miles High - The Byrds So you get in a plane to England and fly about eight miles in the air. And when you touch down you write a song about it…and everyone says, “Oh, you druggies! We aren’t playing that!” “No, it’s not about drugs!” the Byrds retorted. “Yes, it is!” media reports (including the then-influential music trade paper Gavin Report) shouted. And pfft, the song was gone from the radio. Later, of course, David Crosby said, “Of course it’s a drug song! We were stoned when we wrote it!” Here we are in 2023, and “Eight Miles High” gets airplay on classic rock stations, while the Gavin Report went under in 2002. So who won that battle in the long run? Eight Miles High Written by Gene Clark, Roger McGuinn, and David Crosby Recorded by the Byrds From Fifth Dimension, 1966 Reason banned: drug references Rain gray town:

David Crosby, whatever you were high on, your talents shined through! Gavin Report, Ha! Ha!

@kobesbuddy — they’ve argued it for eons, and slapping an “art” tag on it makes it something you can’t ban because it’s “expression.”

So true! We remember David Crosby. Bill Gavin? Not so much!

@FourWalls David Crosby, a "legend" when it comes to rock&roll music! The present day music is deafening many young people. Why isn't THIS being banned? A vehicle drives past and the vibration from their music is terrible

Times certainly have changed when it comes lyrics and what would cause a song to be banned

@FourWalls Some of the current stuff my grandkids listen to should be banned.

Great song. If my memory serves, this song is referenced in American Pie by Don McLean and in Willie, Waylon, and Me by David Allan Coe.

I've been missing again. Are you doing a series of banned songs? That will be interesting.

@JudyEv — I’m flattered that you stop by just to shrug at my silly musical tastes.

@FourWalls I love all the series but run out of things to say other than, usually, 'I don't remember this one'! But I know you forgive me.

This sounds vaguely familiar. I love the Byrds. They were definitely high when they wrote this. Have a great Independence Day.

I hardly ever hear that tune if at all. I must be listening to the banned rock radio stations

No, you’re probably listening to the corporate “we have two slots allocated to the Byrds so we’ll play ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’ and ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’” radio stations.

Not as well-remembered as “Mr. Tambourine Man” or “Turn! Turn! Turn!”

Funny at first I thought I did not know this but then I remembered I had heard it before. The Byrds were favorites,

I believed they were innocent and the media had it all wrong until he fessed up. I saw Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in a concert at the Dallas cowboy stadium that is now torn down.

I saw Neil Young at Reunion Arena in 1983. Is that still standing?
