Putting on a Super Cape . . .

Pop pop pop. Crackle sizzle whissssssssstle. Boom boom BOOM. The illegal fireworks in the neighborhood the other night were awful. With the LOUDness and lights flashing (too close it seemed) it was like a war zone . But all I could do is watch, complain, and hope for it to be over soon. Even the news reported about the illegal fireworks going off across Southern California . My activist friends, however, took the next steps I never dared to. Their July 4th evening was spent driving around and patrolling their neighborhood! They took videos, photos, and addresses of those firing off fireworks - and reported them to the authorities. The assumption is often nothing would be done. But apparently it worked from their last year's reporting . . . the usual offenders on a particular street there were actually quiet this year . Thank goodness for the unsung heroes who put on their super capes and take action . Have you applauded anyone who dared to put on a super cape lately?

If you call cops or fire here..they do come for illegal fireworks..BUT all they do is stand and watch them too

I honestly have never seen cops or fire guys in action to stop people with their fireworks. I wouldn't be surprised if they were doing it at their own houses !!

I'm glad that works there. It doesn't work here. Our city allows fireworks on the 4th but I've complained before about fireworks being shot for a week, every night, before the 4th... The police told me everything would quieten back down after the 4th. I know the old couple next door complained about the mortars being fired off at midnight by the kids down the street before the 4th and they were told "kids will be kids".

Well, it worked for "them" (they're like not even 10 miles from us) . . . but it won't work everywhere. I doubt they'd really do anything in our area. Yes, fireworks start like a couple weeks before and after the 4th - and sometimes goes on til 2-3am. This year there was actually less of it, so I thought maybe it'd die down this year for the 4th. Nope - it was worse. Ugh what the police will tell folks. Fines/jail are threatened, but it seems it's never enforced . . . so everyone knows they'll get away with it. It's no wonder the fireworks get bigger and worse each year. I don't feel particularly protected to be honest.

@DaddyEvil We are told they are too overwhelmed with other priorities so they cannot bother to get around over fireworks. So much for enforcement - of anything! I don't even know what happens after the 4th - but I'll tell ya we still see the fireworks (though not as much as the 4th). We are doing fine. How are you and Pretty? So much is going on in real life . . . it's too much personal stuff to post here . . . some days I'm about to lose it. But otherwise, I'm ok .

@much2say The police actually have to do their jobs before it will work here. And they won't... at least not with fireworks. Here, after the 4th, the police will enforce the city ordnance. How are you and your family?

Oh wow i can’t imagine going around taking videos and photos of those doing the illegal fireworks. It is so frustrating though to be trying to sleep and hearing them all hours I’m of the night.

@much2say yes I think it definitely could be dangerous if people caught them taking photos of their property or if people found out who was the one going around reporting everyone .

@shaggin I guess that's the kind of world we live in - it's too much of a risk to try to do the right thing .

I know, I couldn't do it either. Kinda dangerous to do that too, I would think. But apparently it got rid of some of the crazy firework culprits in their neighborhood. This year the fireworks sounded louder and closer - no way we could even try to sleep early!

The bozos who do this here know how to hide themselves so that no one can get shots or videos of them. They always leave the door to denial open. I suppose it's because this is mostly a rural area so anyone traveling on the road would be spotted before they could get close enough for a shot. I wish I had the dingles to do what your friends have done.

Here they don't even try to hide or conceal . . . they know darn well no one is going to do anything and they do it right out in the open . I was actually surprised my friends did this (honestly, who would take the time to do that) . . . but they were super mad because the people behind them were out of control from previous years. Houses are so close that they were able to just video them from over their wall. I'm also surprised the police actually did something about it too.

I'm more surprised the cops did something, that's really unusual. I can't see what anyone is doing in their yards be it back or front, everyone has at least a half acre so we're not actually close together.

@rebelann Right - how sad for us to think that cops actually did something . Half acre is a lot . . here we are all a whole lot closer than that. We can walk out the front door and see everyone's front yard on this street. Look out the windows and you could see the windows of the direct neighbors, side, front, and back.

All people should do the same, if they are fined they remember that it's something they should not do.

Sadly, people here know that most likely the cops will not come, they are apparently too overwhelmed to even bother. I never understood that . . . if there is no one to enforce, then no one will stop. They are not threatened at all by the hefty fines and jailtime. It gets worse each year .

@LadyDuck Many little problems equal too many problems, especially if they do not get resolved and can lead to even bigger problems. Poison indeed! There are not enough police/cops around here. It is unbelievable that some people actually think we should abolish the police - are they crazy?

@much2say - The police is there to be sure that the laws are respected. There are more important things, this is sure, but the everyday small things are finally the little problems that poison people life. They come here, even for minor problems.

I'm glad someone finally did something about the fireworks. There is too much danger of fires in your area. Dozens of people set off fireworks in our area for several days; but I'm not sure what the laws are here. Enjoy your day.

Right - you would think people would be more conscious about fire dangers out here. Surprisingly this year they didn't start weeks before . . . so I had thought there might be less of it on the 4th - nope! If only something could be done about ALL the fireworks (I guess no one feels threatened about fines/jailtime). Hope you enjoyed your 4th!

@LindaOHio We tried to cook our usual July 4th foods indoors (we couldn't bbq that day) was pretty much all we did. We used to go out to see pro firework shows, but no sense doing that since we literally see big fireworks over the backyard skies now . Hope you're having a good week thus far!

I've heard for years that nothing becomes of reporting fireworks, so I think most people don't bother. In the meantime the fireworks get bigger and worse each year. I'm glad my friends were able to get some of them, but we know it's a battle with tons more who will keep doing it.

Good for them. With the area so densely populated there it shouldn't be happening to begin with.

It shouldn't be happening yet the fireworks get bigger and worse each year. These folks don't seem to be concerned about scared animals and people, fires, injuries, etc . . . they don't even seem threatened about fines/jailtime.

Around here, the fireworks are legal. Fortunately, most everyone stops between 10 and 10:30 pm. If they don't, the sheriff's office will cite them for disturbing the peace if someone files a complaint.

That is amazing - it sounds like how it was here when I was growing up. How considerate your area is . . . people will usually start with the fireworks 2 weeks before AND after the 4th - sometimes til 2-3am. Usually filing a complaint does nothing here . . . cops don't even show up til an hour or two later when it's too late. I couldn't believe in this case that a report actually gave results!

It seems there must have been a lot of blatant ignoring of the laws. Fireworks are banned here too as is the sale of them.

@JudyEv They say zero tolerance in CA. But not much is enforced. The sale is banned here . . . but it's not difficult to go buy fireworks elsewhere where it is legal - obviously A LOT of people are getting their hands on them and could care less about laws .

@much2say No. It's difficult to buy them for starters as the sale is banned.
