Here it is, high noon (well, noon here, JJ’s the one who’s high ), and I’m just warming up for a song for y’all? I have a long day ahead of me, a hot date with the prep. That’s okay, there are a couple of LONG movies on YouTube (The Longest Day and Tora! Tora! Tora!) that’ll keep me entertained while I’m parked in the bathroom tonight. Meanwhile, here’s a song that raised a stink to the point where some stations wouldn’t play it. Short People - Randy Newman Here’s Randy Newman. In the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Winner of two Oscars for his work on movie soundtracks. And what happens? His biggest hit is a controversy!! Newman is a master of sarcasm. One of his great songs is “Political Science,” where he laments how “they all hate” the United States, so his answer is “let’s drop the big one now.” (Of course, “we’ll save Australian, don’t wanna hurt no kangaroo.”) If you believe he meant that then you’ll believe me when I tell you he’ll be the next pope. He’s not serious here, either. He wasn’t talking about people short in physical stature, but people short on brains and/or empathy. (In other words, politicians. ) Of course, like Alice Cooper’s song “Only Women,” some people just couldn’t get past the title. As a result, some stations said they received so many complaints about the song they pulled it from rotation. Newman (who, as one article about the song was quick to point out, is six feet tall) said he got a lot of flack, backlash, and even a few death threats. A Maryland representative even wanted to make saying the song’s title illegal. Newman said he couldn’t believe anyone would take it seriously. But they did. Glad those people never heard his song “Rednecks.” Short People Written by Randy Newman Recorded by Randy Newman From Little Criminals, 1977 Reason banned: considered offensive to short people You gotta pick ‘em up just to say hello:

One day, my dear, you will watch Toy Story and sing along with “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”

There's always somebody without a sense of humor. I remembered the beat but few of the words. And, I'm short!

I know this song too well - yah yah yah. Growing up, I was ALWAYS the shortest person in the class . . . I heard this song a billion times over (and not by Randy Newman actually . . . anyone who wanted to remind me of my size knew this song ).

You’d think that, after all the books in the world with titles that have no relationship to the plot of the book, people wouldn’t jump to conclusions from a song’s title. Nope.

@FourWalls Perception is everything. People don't think about what it might be about, only what they think it's about.

Considering the lyrics were very precise in describing people of diminutive physical stature, it was not surprising that many people of such stature found this song offensive. Unless you were familiar with Randy's style and musical history, nothing in the song itself gives away the true targets of his sarcasm.

I remember someone saying in a review of a Warren Zevon album, “If Randy Newman sang ‘God Bless America’ straight you wouldn’t believe him.” Unless, as you say, someone is unfamiliar with Randy’s wicked sense of humor.

This song makes me laugh because it brings back memories of when my kids were growing up. I have three daughters and the oldest two used to sing this song and tease the youngest. It wasn't quite a funny back then when I would be yelling at the older two to stop with the teasing.

Kids will be kids, even without a song to “help” them tease others.

Eric Bogle did a couple of these types of sarcastic songs but some listeners never got it and thought he was being racist. I Hate Wogs comes to mind.

Randy has another song called “Rednecks,” which uses the “N-word” eight times. Superficially it sounds like it’s insulting southerners (“college men from LSU, went in dumb come out dumb too”), but the actual message of the song is the “high and snobby” northerners created the ghetto system (“free to be put in a cage on the south side of Chicago”).

You’re correct. Don’t know if you saw yesterday’s song. It was an instrumental.
