Almost earless goats - the LaMancha

I spoke to my sister last night. She lives with her son and they have around 100 purebred goats, which they breed mostly for sale to other goat breeders. Their main breeding focus is on Nigerian Dwarfs. However, they have just acquired another Toggenburg doe which arrived in Western Australia with some other goats for other breeders. Among the mix were several LaMancha goats. LaMancha goats are most recognisable by their almost complete lack of ears. They are excellent milk producers and the milk has a high butterfat content. They are also very people-oriented. The photo is courtesy of Just chaos, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons. I don’t find them particularly attractive but to each his own.

Have you told your sister that she and her son may be having too much fun raising goats? Like you, I don't find the almost earless LaMancha goats "nice looking" but I'm not the one raising them.

I'm glad they're not breeding them. They have most other breeds but also have a lot of chicken breeds too as well as two dogs, guinea pigs and birds. My sister isn't quite involved as she once was as she turns 85 next week.

@JudyEv Oh, I see... It sounds like a lot of work. I'm glad your nephew can handle it all.

Oh, I think it is adorable! I’d like to have one myself. My best friend has 2 Nubian, 3 Nigerian Dwarfs, 1 LaMancha, 1 mixture of those, and one really fat rescue goat no one can identify.

@JudyEv That must have been so cool! I love my friend’s goats. They tore up her last car by constantly jumping on it, as goats do, but that just motivated her to get her garage cleaned out, and put her replacement car in that garage. They are hard not to love.

The mixes, like dog mixes, are still adorable. I've always loved goats and had one as a pet.

100 is too many really but each doe that kids usually has more than one baby so the numbers increase rapidly.

I don’t know that much about goats. I do see them sometimes In pastures kicking up their heels or grazing.

this animal looks more like a sheep than a goat. Do they stay in the hills?

No, our nephew has five acres divided into paddocks and he keeps his goats in those.

@LindaOHio It's only the males that are really smelly. The does are okay.

Why would anyone want to breed a goat to have no ears?

I've no idea. However, they were extremely good milkers so perhaps that was what was behind it. But people breed for all sorts of strange reasons - just look at some of the dog breeds. To me, it's just another fad.

But it looks as if she has ear lobes... she has a very demure look about her, anyway.

They have ear openings and are allowed an inch (I think) of external ear.

I'm sure. The bucks aren't too worried about a doe's ears.
