Your Grandpa and You

I understand some of you didn’t know your grandfather(s), and some of you may have wished you hadn’t. I only knew my maternal grandfather, and he was wonderful. He had five granddaughters, and delighted in every single one. He taught me a lot, and was smart, but I really admired his wisdom. I wish he could have lived to meet Amyra, my 12 year old niece, but unfortunately, he didn’t. Anyway, Amyra wants to be taught how to fish, and my sister has told her that sounds like a job for grandpa, my dad. He hasn’t been fishing in years, but he grew up in the country, so of course he knows how. I’m sure they’ll have a blast with each other. Did you have any special moments with your grandfather? Did he teach you anything special?

I had a paternal grandpa, who was getting feeble when I knew him. He'd sing silly tunes and jingles, that kept us all smiling. Years earlier, Grandpa had been very musical, with a true bass voice. My maternal grandpa passed away at 61 years old, two years before I was born. He was a devoted dairy farmer.

The silliness sounds like my grandpa too, and that makes me smile.

@AmbiePam Also, my grandpa would push his bottom dentures out, like a monster! We'd all scream and laugh at this:)

Oh yeah, we rode on the tractor with him in the summer when we stayed on the farm. He also taught us how to make a whistle out of a blade of grass. My other grandfather always took us to get popsicles when we visited.

I wish I had these grandparent experiences! I truly wonder what they may have taught me. My dad's dad, whom I never got to meet, apparently loved photography and made a darkroom in his house in Japan . . . one wouldn't think that was a thing in his generation nor place. My dad wanted to take my son fishing someday but didn't get around to it.

He sounds like he would have been cool; a dark room… That would have been fun to know about how to develop film, and get a good shot.

My grandfather was very special to me and very kind. The only think I can remember him tryiing to teach me was to spit in the water when we both washed our hands (in the same water - it was precious at the time) so that we wouldn't argue later. I wasn't very keen on that.

I knew both of my grandfathers. My Dad's father lived beside us in the 'retiree' house on the farm. I remember when he had to give up his driver's license because of his eyesight. About the same time he had to get hearing aids, they never really worked. His legacy was dictating the family history, generation by generation, from 1832 when we arrived in Canada forward to the year of 1978 when he dictated it to me to type out. The details that he told, especially in his generation's chapter, are so very detailed. Children, especially boys, did not stay in school once they could work the land or work in the lumber mill the family owned. His explanation was not that they were ignorant so much, as they did this out of necessity. And they all carved very good lives for them and their future wives and families. Many of them went on to run businesses which are still well known today.

My grandfather was a very knowledgeable man. He was a landlord and also a proofreader for a prominent newspaper. He had a great passion for writing. The articles and songs he wrote still inspire me today. Unfortunately, I never saw him alive.

I only knew grandparents on my mother's side - but my grandpa is still with us, even if he is not in good health. He did take us camping, taught us to fish, etc.

My grandfather taught me to drive and of course that's where I got my love of coffee. He passed away in 1975 and I still miss him. My dad was very much involved in my kids lives and although he passed away many years ago they all have great memories of him.

I'd go with my Auntie. My mother was not athletic and didn't like ocean water. But my Auntie was. When I was little, she would take me out into the Atlantic waves, and we would hold our breath, dip under, and then explode into the sparkling sunshine. It was, and is, one of most my fondest and most loving memories.

No. I had no personal moments with either of my grandfathers. Both were from Italy; and one was very grumpy and one never made an effort to get close. Enjoy your day.

How lovely. I love fishing. In fact, my husband and I were crazy about going fishing. That was before covid. As soon as he comes home back from work he will get ready and we would go fishing. We would return home 3 am sometimes. We were that crazy. I am happy that Amyra wants to learn fishing. I never got a chance to spend time with any of my grandparents.

@AmbiePam Yes and every day we would go fishing. At least for 3 to 4 hours. But mostly we lasted over 5 hours with high tides.
