Leaving The Nest.

Were you or are you in a hurry for your adult children to leave home and find a place of their own? In 2020, because of covid my son started working from home and decided to leave the city and move to the country family home where l am. Last month he moved back to the city to take up a very lucrative job offer and l feel lost. He had his own apartment here and it was good knowing that he was nearby and that he was eating right. He had to discard the pants he came with and get new ones to accomodate his slimmer, trimmer figure. Will he return to bad eating habits when he is in the city? . He does not fancy cooking. I have no problem with an adult child or children living with me until they are married. Pixabay image.

I know that you are missing him. Our son came back home too and will be moving to West Virginia with us.

Right now my kids are 18 and 13 . . . it's hard to even think they will one day be out on their own. My oldest will be attending college locally, for now. We tell them they are welcome to stay here as long as they keep productive .

@Kandae11 Yep - that could mean getting educated/trained, work, or even helping around the house .

That is a good criteria - keep productive.

It is a better opportunity for him so l know he should avail himself of it. He promised to visit every two weeks or once a month, depending on his schedule.

Both our sons have been out of the house and on their own for a good while now. The oldest owns his own home in California. The youngest will soon be moving to the DC area. It will be the first time both have lived out of state. I would be happier if they settled closer to home, but they are grown now and have their lives to live.

@Kandae11 I've heard said that you know you did your job well as a parent if your kids grow up to be independent, self-reliant, and happy with their path in life. Based on that, K and I did well.

@Kandae11 oh dear. That's about how far Tammy and her family are from us. It makes for an awfully long ride.

I don’t have children, but I think my dad would be fine if I lived with him and his wife. I think his wife wouldn’t mind if I lived there as we all get along.

I know that my parents were devastated when I told them that I was going to get married. They thought I was still "a baby" and they hated to see me go.

I do understand how they felt. I remember too how devastated my mother was when my eldest sister decided to move to Canada.

I'm actually kind of dreading Pretty moving out. I'm glad she's stayed with me as long as she has but she's got a boyfriend in Georgia that she's talking about moving in with... No idea when, though.

I didn't mind my son living with me. I only live alone because Housing won't allow another person to live with me.

@Kandae11 It's not a housing development. It's the Housing program from the government for low income.

Okay. I know some housing developments have strict rules pertaining to what tenants can and cannot do.

Our sons couldn't wait to move out but we're good friends although they now live plane flights away. Thank heavens for cheap phone calls, email, Zoom, etc.

In India it's very natural for adult children to live with their parents. I am with my son in Kolkata now. We'll go back to our home city in the month of September and he will work from home in the month of October. I have also got used to staying alone.

@Kandae11 Every mother wants that. In India when I see joint families I wish my children too work in the same city where our home is.

It is hard to be apart from your children. My son hasn't lived with me full time though since he was in his teens. He was so hard to get up for school, and really wasn't a bad student. I didn't get it..

I remember the school days - junior school - clearly. In fact he is the reason why many years later l still get up at 5am - 6 the latest. His school had a shift system and every other year he would be on the early morning shift. Which meant l got up early to get him up and make his breakfast.

My adult daughter lives with me and I love having her here. She came back after a nasty divorce. I'm sure you'll miss having your son nearby. I would miss my kids and grandkids if they moved further away than where they live now.

I agree with you. This is a good way to save money. Best wishes to your son on his new job. The good news is he's not far away
