With summer in full swing, it got me to thinking about a topic I wanted to discuss for a while. Putting together a selection of my favorite beach movies which gives me that summertime feeling. It also doesn't hurt that some of these films are classic and timeless too. See if you agree if any of these flicks are worthy ones or maybe you can tell me some you liked better. Here are my first selection of favorite movies and a description about each film... 10. BEACH BLANKET BINGO -Annette and Frankie romp on the beach when times were carefree, surfing was the rage, and catching some rays was a must. Of the seven beach movies they made, this one might be the most popular. If you saw this flick you might recall the slapstick cameos of Paul Lynde and "Big Drag" Don Rickles. And of course Eric von Zipper, the motorcyle gang leader and "Wild Bunch" wannabe. A mindless film which provides you with a type of summer escapism to an innocent romantic time where America was at peace and your only worry was getting a good tan. ***Have you ever watched any of the Frankie and Annette "Beach Party" movie series? Did you have a favorite character? 9. ADRIFT -Probably not on most people's summertime movies they've seen, but I highly recommend this film. Based on a true story of a young couple falling in love and going on a sailing adventure together only to be caught in a horrific hurricane. Suspense galore as they fight for survival floating adrift on their sailboat. The twists and turns throughout the movie have you going "what else can go wrong" in this thriller of a film. ***Have you ever gone sailing? I have, it is quite relaxing! 8. BLUE HAWAII -Had to include an Elvis film, after all he's not "The King" for nothing, even if that title is not for most of the "cheesy" movies he made. This flick has Elvis working as a sightseeing tour guide showing off the island to a group of female clients (of course). This movie has Elvis singing many songs (a formula used in all his films), including one of my favorite Presley tunes "Can't Help Falling in Love." Add a scene where he shows off his ukulele playing, plus some breathtaking Hawaiian scenery, and you have a recipe for a feel-good summer musical. ***What's your favorite Elvis movie? 7. THE DECENDANTS -This is another movie which takes place in Hawaii starring George Clooney as Matt King who is dealing with not only the tragic accident of his wife, who is in a coma from a boating accident, but his broken relationship with his two daughters. The film also has a second plot line where Clooney's character, Matt, must decide what he will do as trutee with the land that his family inherited, sell it for redevelopment (which will bring a lot of money for him and his decendants), or leave it untouched in its natural beauty. Adding to the drama is a secret affair his comatose wife was having and his responce upon hearing this from his daughter. And there you go, my first installment of my favorite beach movies. ***Have you seen any of these beach movies? What did you like about them? Comments and musings on my picks and movie questions always welcome, and of course sharing your own favorite beach picks are encouraged. Hope you can wait till my next movie edition featuring my next selections... Looking forward to your reactions and discussing them! Some Source Info: Yardbarker, IMDB.com

Thanks for the reviews. I think I saw Blue Hawaii many moons ago but I haven't seen the other two. I should get my act together and start watching more of these old movies.

I highly recommend #' 7 & 9. Really good stories and excellent acting. George Clooney got a best actor nomination and the movie also received one for "The Descendents." Shailene Woodley who plays the eldest daughter in The Descendents was also in movie #9 ADRIFT. The Director of The Descendents film also directed the movie "Sideways" 7 years ago. Did you see that one?

Terrific scenery! Boy, if that doesn't make you think of summertime. Fun facts: This was the most financially successful of all of Elvis Presley's movies. Did you notice Angela Lansbury famous for her series "Murder She Wrote" played a mother in the film. There were some great tunes as you said. Did you know: this soundtrack album was not only Elvis Presley's most successful chart album, but it is also the number one album overall for 1961. Sadly, singing songs and pretty girls in an exotic setting became the movie formula for Elvis thanks to Col. Parker. No chance for a serious acting career for the King.

@dgobucks226 .......Yes, she was good at it. Better to have one that was successful than none. Too bad they didn't write better scripts for him. I like this one and Love Me Tender but several others were pretty good as well.

I only saw Jailhouse Rock at the right time. The others (not many) I saw when I was too old and could realize that whoever made him do them should be in jail with the late Colonel Parker.

You were right about Col. Parker's motives. Make as much money off of Elvis as possible. Blue Hawaii was the most financially successful of all of Elvis Presley's movies. Elvis finally said enough of this and went back to singing on stage again.

Yes, I think that one was the best. I also remember Lynde from Hollywood Squares. He was the center square, so he eventually had to be called on for his witty responses.

Yes, Baywatch was an interesting TV show. Never saw the movie version. That show set on the beach and ocean definitely would have a summer feel to it.

I’ve seen Blue Hawaii and Beach Blanket Bingo. I grew up on old movies because my parents were so strict. I’m grateful for that now.

Yes, some of the best movies are those oldies. Real plots and less techno wizardry and special effects. Just real acting. Fun facts: This was the most financially successful of all of Elvis Presley's movies. Did you notice Angela Lansbury famous for her series "Murder She Wrote" played a mother in the film. Marta Kristen appears in Beach Blanket Bingo the same year of her breakout role on television's "Lost in Space (1965)." Her role was Lorelei, the Mermaid. Nancy Sinatra turned down this role.

I saw a lot of the Annette & Frankie movies .... not that I would have picked them but back in the early 80s those were the only movies on before the channels went off air. I worked nights so I wasn't really up and around until about noonish or so. As for those Elvis movies, I did try to watch them but they were so boring.

You make a good point about those Elvis movies. After Blue Hawaii's success at the box office (highest grossing film for Elvis) and as a soundtrack recording #1 for 1961, sadly, singing songs and pretty girls in an exotic setting became the movie formula for Elvis thanks to Col. Parker. No chance for a serious acting career for the King. If you ever get the chance to stream any of these films, they are worth watching. Especially, #'s 7 & 9. The Descendents was directed by the same person who did the film "Sideways." If you saw that one, I thought this one was equal to it.

Ah, another Beach themed movie! Shelley Fabares was in that one. She had quite an interesting acting career from teen roles right up until her role in the TV series "Coach." Other fun facts: She played on the "Donna Reed Show" for 5 seasons as the character Mary Stone. Shelley enjoyed a #1 Billboard hit with the breathy, sultry-edged "Johnny Angel." Fabares also was in 2 other Elvis films "Spinout" and "Girl Happy." (Guess Elvis and the director liked her as a co-star)
