The co-founder of Chuy’s Tex-Mex Restaurants passed away yesterday in Austin, Texas. I asked the manager, and he knew him and said he was a wonderful, humble guy. This chicken taco salad’s for you, Mike. And so’s this song, although its purpose for being here today is because it showed up on the Clear Channel Memo of songs that shouldn’t be played after 9/11. Morning Has Broken - Cat Stevens And you’re thinking, “Hey, didn’t you just use this song in the religious countdown last year?” Yes, I did! Thanks for noticing! He was also on last month’s list of banned songs. And, truthfully, I wonder how much the reason behind last month’s inclusion (a lot of Stevens’ music was pulled after it was reported he expressed agreement with the fatwa against Salman Rushdie) was behind this month’s inclusion. For the record, “Peace Train” was also on the list. As I said with other “peaceful” songs on the list, a lot of people wanted Toby Keith’s “we’ll put a boot in your ass, it’s the American way,” NOT hymns (this song dates to the early 1930s) or “Kumbaya.” So, between that and Stevens’ previous strike against him, this got put on the list. Sad. Morning Has Broken Lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon, traditional melody Adapted by Cat Stevens Recorded by Cat Stevens From Teaser and the Firecat, 1971 God’s re-creation of the new day:

@fourwalls Strange that when he wanted to make money singing a song he had to rip one out of the hymn book to sing.

It was a popular thing in the early 70s. Remember that a nun had a hit with “The Lord’s Prayer,” and the Byrds had a hit with a song that was the third chapter of Ecclesiastes.

I just love this song. Honestly, I don´t understand why this song should be banned.

@FourWalls I understand some reasons why Cat Stevens might have been banned once. But not the song.

One of my favorite hymns. I have sung it with my late sister accompanying me on an auto harp,. It was also sung at my baby shower for my first child.

It’s a gorgeous relatively new hymn (relatively new, considering how things like “Silent Night” was written in 1818).

I wonder if he'll turn up again in one of your lists? You could one with soloists/groups involving creatures' names. lol

LOL. He was on last month’s and the “religious rock” countdown (which had a country song in it…silly me).

@JudyEv — oh, no, he’s not even in the top 50. Not with my love of the Eagles and Boz Scaggs to deal with.

@FourWalls I did read that. Does he hold the record for most number of mentions?

Great song. I believe by now you know my thoughts on Clearwater Radio and their foolishness on banning songs.

It is a beautiful song. That’s Rick Wakeman from Yes playing the piano, and it makes the song so much more beautiful.

This is a beautiful song. I'm sure Stevens's conversion to Islam had a lot do to with his songs being on the list.

To be fair, there were other “peace songs” on the list, not just Cat. But I think his exclusion took less debate than, say, John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
