Oh, boy. As I’ve said all month long, there are songs that ended up on the Clear Channel Memorandum list that are understandable, and some that probably made it to the list because of the title or a line in the song. And then there’s the “what the HECK??????” songs. This is one of those. #6: Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel Maybe it’s because Paul and Art didn’t get along? Funny story: my first-ever college class attendance came in 1980. I was in DC, visiting a friend who was attending American University. She had one class she had to attend on the Monday I was there, so I went with her. It was American Popular Music. Interestingly enough, the song the professor was discussing that day was this one. In the course of the lecture he mentioned that this song had subtle religious overtones. I buy that, because, right before he said that, I leaned over to my friend and said, “This could be construed as a religious song.” Whether you see it that way or not, this is an incredible song of comfort, love, and friendship. It’s one of Simon’s songwriting masterpieces (if not the masterpiece), and Garfunkel’s voice is simply exquisite. (Funny story: recently Simon said he thought he should’ve sung this. Paul? NO.) One of the great classics of American music, period. Bridge Over Troubled Water Written by Paul Simon Recorded by Simon & Garfunkel From Bridge Over Troubled Water, 1970 Sail on, silver girl:

Wait a minute, that’s TWO songs this month you’ve known! We’re above average! Or should I just “bank” this one for next month?

I always thought the line was "sail on, silver bird." Learned something new today. Yes, the religious overtones of this song come through clearly, IMHO.

“Silver Bird” was Mark Lindsay.

@FourWalls Yes, I remember the song "Silver Bird." Silver girl doesn't make sense in "Bridge ..." I always thought Paul lost his train of thought near the end of the song and began jotting down random phrases. A little research shows I hit pretty close to the mark.

@DWDavis — I listen to later songs like “You Can Call Me Al” and think Paul lost his train of thought after he and Art broke up!

The only song I can play on piano is “Chopsticks.” Seems like this would be a good piano lesson.

@FourWalls Oh yes, the very popular “Chopsticks” that every kid seems to learn even if they never take piano lessons.

It’s an encouraging song, regardless. And encouragement is something we needed.

I do think Paul regrets giving the solo to Artie. He did reclaim it when he performed solo. A timeless classic as you mentioned and one that can relate to our current state of America and the rest of the world. Troubled... Hopefully, someone can come to our rescue and dry those tears in our eyes.

I’ve heard two occasions where someone said they, not the other person, should’ve sung the song: Paul with this, and Charlie Louvin with “When I Stop Dreaming.” In both cases they were WRONG.

@FourWalls Well, I concur with that too! Art's soaring vocals on that song's lyrics made it an eventual hit for the duo. Of course, musicians and jealousy come with the territory. So many have eventually broken up over not getting the credit they deserved, or having their contributions excluded, among other arguments. Depriving us of some more great songs.

I do not usually pop into your music posts because mostly I do not know the songs. First heard this on a debate trip, when we were at the site and just chilling in between rounds. I have no idea why this would be included as one to remove.

If they had a REASON (e.g., “nobody wants to hear harmony right now”) I could understand it.
