Six Shades of White

I was matching socks the other day. I sort them into piles of like colors and try to find the mates. I thought the white pile would be easy and fast, but no, there are so many shades of white. Some look white when you glance at them but change when you take a closer look. One is a ghostly shade of blue, another has a tinge of pink or even yellow. Then there are dark white, medium white, and light-colored white with creamy hints. What do you do when you try to sort socks? Do you always get them right? Do you ever want to throw them out and start over? I am tempted!

I can't recall ever seeing a dark white.

Sorry about that @akalinus it was funny though. I really never thought white had any shades whatsoever but I have a few tshirts that are dingy.

It is probably a sock that has seen better days. This discussion is not about people, just the sock world.

I do not wash many pairs of socks together, I never have problems pairing them as soon as I get them out from the washing machine.

@akalinus I wash the white socks with whites and often the other colors manually.

@LadyDuck That is a good idea. I often wash certain things by hand so I don't have to worry about them getting shrunk or misshapen in the wash.

I don't know what happens in my house. They get all over the place. I wash mine separately and I don't have that problem with mine.

I buy a dozen pairs of socks of the same color and throw away the old ones. Then I have no problems sorting my socks. (I only buy new socks every four or five years, though.)

@akalinus I really don't like sorting socks. Pretty's mom always bought socks with six different pair in each bag so they had to be sorted. Some people are weird, in my opinion.

It is great when they all match. I used to do this a lot when my kids lived at home.

It's much the same when you try to match wool for knitting or crochet. So many shades and sometimes you can't tell they're different until you get them in a certain light.

Yes, you think they are all the same but it is amazing how many colors look alike until you compare them with other samples.

Our socks are pretty easy to match up. Have a good day.

I so rarely wear socks, so I don’t have the occasion to have to go through them often. Of course, when I did wear socks a lot, it could be quite a chore to get right.

I seldom wear socks but people I live with do. Sometimes, I want to throw them (the socks) in the trash and start over.
