When You Doubt Someone’s Sanity

My best friend growing up (haven’t seen her in about four years) texts me quite a lot, and over the years she has had some health problems. She has had her gallbladder removed, her appendix, her uterus, and her spleen. Yes, her spleen. One day, I suggested she change specialists, and she was quick to explain she’d never seen a specialist. This girl had her spleen removed solely on the advice of her primary care doctor and a general surgeon! What the heck?! How do you have all that removed from your body, and not see anyone besides those two doctors? She also sees a pain management doctor, but he has nothing to do with those surgeries. Finally, after going to the ER last week, the doctor there referred her to a cardiologist, and it looks like she has POTS (P.O.T.S.?), which involves an arrhythmia, and passing out. There is more to it, so feel free to look it up. My mind was absolutely blown. Is there a world in which you would have allowed this? I can’t believe her husband didn’t intervene either.

Removing organs is a huge deal . . . how could she have never seen a specialist??? I would totally question any surgery - get 2nd or 3rd opinions. Sheesh, at that rate, she will have no innards left !!

I hate that it makes me wonder about her intelligence. I just can't fathom letting someone do that without getting other opinions.

Uhm... and you know for sure that she's actually had these surgeries? I'm almost positive a GP won't recommend surgery. They always send you to a specialist.

Yeah, she's had them. I've seen her records, and she documented it all on Facebook. From spleen removal to nerve ablations...she leaves it all out there for people to see. No surprise the primary care who started recommending things be removed abruptly left the practice a few years ago.

@AmbiePam Your friend should have sued! She may still be able to sue the practice if it's still in business even if that particular doctor has moved on.

I would have thought her primary care doctor would have referred her to a specialist.

Exactly! He recently left the practice, and her new PCP didn’t refer her to anyone else either. Now, she’s even having nerve ablations.

Oh, my. I think she needs to have a second opinion or so before having these procedures. That's the problem for some doctors who are not doing their jobs.

I don’t know what she was thinking. I also thought her husband was smarter than that because he ended up having a positive effect on her.

The spleen is especially concerning given the job it does. I'd really want to explore all the options (but I live in a country that still has socialised health care). You do have to wonder if some people actually like being on hospitals. There are folks with mental illnesses who even fake or cause symptoms. Not saying you friend does, she might just be unfortunate.

I think she started off with real health problems, but then she quit taking care of herself, and it seemed to compound the problem. I’m starting to be concerned about why she never pushed to get a second opinion.

That is off the wall to say the least. Primary doctors here send you off to specialists. And even then, I would want a second opinion. SMH!!

On the word of her PCP? No no no no no. You see a specialist for any surgery. I'm so sorry to hear this.

Yes I would question her sanity having all those surgeries without getting at least a second opinion. No way would they wheel me into the operating room without me knowing there was no other alternative.

Is she mad? Hope she is guided properly by her cardiologist. Heaven knows what's going to happen to her.

This is not good at all. The removal of major organs should only be done if there is no other choice at all. POTS is not a nice disease at all. My oldest daughter has it and has suffered for years from it. She does her very best to live a normal life, but there are many times that she cannot. Maybe your friend needs some serious help or advice on how to make medical decisions, she isn't doing so well on her own. I cannot imagine going on the advice of a general surgeon with all that going on. This isn't 1800's, we do have better options than just to accept the only doctor available. Very sad, I am so sorry.

I’m not sure who she would listen to since I thought for sure her husband knew better. Her mom is currently battling opioid addiction, so she is distancing herself from her mom. Once I found out she hadn’t seen a specialist I urged her to see one, and she said she’d mention it to her PCP. Fortunately, that ER doc she saw after she passed out had enough sense to refer her to that cardiologist.

@AmbiePam Endless surgeries can truly take a toll on the body. In her case, they may not have been necessary at all, which is so sad.
