Earning our keep

We’re not being paid for house-sitting but we’ve asked for a donation towards gas for the car. And we’ve also taken a leg of lamb from their freezer. We were told to have as much lamb as we wanted but one roast will be enough. So today I was sitting at the table and happened to look up to see one of the ponies on the grass round the swimming pool. They have an electric fence round their paddock but when the winds were so strong, one of the uprights leaned over enough that the pony could step over the wire. At least we think that’s what happened. We put her back and fixed up the fence and I sat back at the table, happened to look up and the puppy had dug her way out of her big backyard. Then the three chooks/chickens have a cardboard box full of straw in their little hutch and that had got soaked and disintegrated. I was lucky enough to find another box complete with straw in a storage room. I feel we’ve earnt the leg of lamb.

It's always the ponies that get into trouble, isn't it?

I think it could look mean to do so, but may be you could have asked the House Owners for some available hard cash for expenses and a few more things. But at times, we desist doing certain things due to social norms.

It's different when it's your own animals you're looking after but looking after someone else's brings a new level of worry to it.

For that you should have another roast . Oh gosh, lots of responsibilities come with house sitting, and I suppose unexpected things do happen.

@much2say We're just a bit too young and active to spend all day every day in a nice new house where there's very little to do.

We can take as much as we like but I don't think we'll need more. We bought quite a bit of food with us.

As you say, pity about the lamb! Both ponies had escaped when I got up. They were safe in the rest of their paddock but there is too much grass there. We rang the owners and they're now in a smaller area which is more securely fenced so we won't need to worry about them so much.

Well, those creatures were really keeping you on your toes. I have read experiences of your earlier house sitting too.. You always have to do a lot especially with those house pets . Seems like these house sitting does not let you actually sit.. But glad that you enjoy them. You definitely deserve that lamb and even more.
