A cute nativity set

We went to a Christmas Fair at the clubhouse in our retirement village. It's still onlly October but their thinking is that everyone gets more and more busy from hereon in so the craft ladies hold their fair early. I was a gold coin donation to enter and you coud buy morning tea there as well as picking up various items that were on sale. Proceeds from the entry fee and morning tea went to Food Bank. As well as the great many items that were for sale, some people also displayed various items they had made but were keeping. One of those was this cute knitted nativity set. In a way, I’d love to crochet a nativity set but I wouldn’t have the patience with all the tiny bits and different colours. It’s sewing in all the loose ends that annoys me. However, it’s still very cute..

It's adorable. I'm sure it took time with all the intricate pieces involved.

It would have to take ages to make all the individual items.

This is really pretty. I have to agree that sewing all those tiny pieces is not something I would enjoy to do.

@JudyEv And you need to use so many different colours, a real pain.

You'd be stopping and starting all the time and there would be so many ends to darn in.

@LadyDuck Exactly. I found some crochet patterns for angels and Christmas bells which might be better than bothering about a nativity set.

@Shavkat Oh sorry. I had a friend in Austria who had knitted a set for herself. That's the only other set I've seen.

I guess you'd only find nativity scenes in Christian homes.

@JudyEv I would think that you would need to test the waters first and see if you can get a few pre-orders before ordering the set itself to make. I think that I would also check to see if there are any 'cheater sets' that you can find online. I do that with recipes. I would think that any small specialty shop that offers collectables, or a Christmas shop would be interested in selling them on consignment for you.

I'm almost tempted to crochet a set. You can buy a crochet set on Ebay for $386!!! I can't imagine it would sell at that price but maybe it would. You can never really charge for your time with craft work. Well, not all your time anyway.

@Juliaacv I hear what you're saying. It would be a lot of effort and you couldn't charge too much even with the amount of work involved. I found some patterns for Christmas bells, snowflakes, angels, etc and I think they would be a better option to make. I might make up a heap and have my own little stall at the clubhouse at the Christmas Fair next year.

When Pretty was little, I crocheted a bunch of different animal finger puppets for her... She kept them for years. They were extremely fiddly, though. I know I don't want to do something like that again.

@JudyEv I only had the patience for making those because I thought Pretty would love them. Otherwise, I made blankets or lap rugs.

@DaddyEvil That would be me too. I would do something for someone I treasured but otherwise stick to bigger/simpler things.

I steer away from anything that is too fiddly. I don't have the patience for it.

I like the donkey. He looks felted, or maybe that's just a result of the fuzziness of your photo. The Centre4Women, to which I go, is having one November 18th I think. (Christmas fair, not donkey.)

I got Vince to take the photo (and forgot to give him credit ) but I would have tried to get a better photo of the donkey as he was very well-done. Do you do any craft work?

The Nativity set looks gorgeous. So people might be buying it in fair numbers? Crocheting would be a long drawn purpose I suppose. Have a nice Thursday!

I have no idea if they sell or not. I'm thinking now I might just make some little bells or angels rather than a full set of people and animals.

@JudyEv That's super cool that you have the ability to crochet. Years ago a lady gave me a small white crocheted angel tree ornament. She starched the angel after she crocheted it. Its safe in with my china.

@sallypup That's a nice idea to crochet Christmas tree ornaments. It would be less fiddly than a complete nativity set.

The donkey was especially well done. I always have trouble putting on the features - eyes, etc. - but the little donkey looked lovely.
