I'm in a rage!

After my dinner/lunch today, I was uploading some YouTube videos to premiere, when somebody rang the doorbell. I thought it was my brother David come to fetch my nephews presents, but no. It was the roofing man come to see if my step-dad was in. I went and told my Mum that there was a fella at the door asking for my step-dad. She was in the dining room asleep snoring at the time. She went to talk to the guy at the door while I went to chase a couple of rats away that were eating the birds food that was dropping to the patio. As soon as I opened the patio door they scurried away! I went to where they had been and I saw a tail disappear into the hedge so I know where they're coming from. I went back into the living room to finish off uploading my YouTube videos, and my Mum went upstairs to get my step-dad to come and have a word with the fella at the door. They were talking about the roof and that, and then they came into the house and went into my bedroom without my permission! THAT is what I'm raging about! When they came out of my bedroom they didn't even close the door properly! They reckon there's damp up the corner of my bedroom because of the roof, but all I can see are shadows. What do you think? (Picture above.)

It's perfectly normal for a roofing contractor to physically examine the job site. Inside and out. I'm assuming that since your Dad was speaking to the roofer, he allowed the access to your room. I see a possible moisture issue in those shadows in your photo. It's difficult to know from a photo. A physical inspection would be required in order to determine the extent of the issue. It's important to determine just where the roof is suspect so it can be addressed before water damages multiply the condition. Someone must have called this roofer, right? I understand how you feel about an intruder in your space, but I would be very cautious of a roofer that DIDN'T inspect inside and out.

And, on top of that, if the roof collapses, who cares about private space? lol

Sure, but he should ask first if he wants to see my private bedroom! He asked last time he came, but that doesn't mean he can just walk in this time without asking! It's rude, intrusive and disrespectful! It's not my step-dad's business to give access to my room! He should ask permission too! No, the roofer came on spek claiming he thought there was something wrong with our roof. No-one called him! And now he keeps on coming round asking if my step-dad has decided what he wants to do. He told my step-dad to call him if he wanted to do anything about it. He should wait till my step-dad calls him, and if he doesn't call presume my step-dad doesn't want anything done! My brother came round yesterday and looked at the roof, and he asked before he went in my bedroom to look at my ceiling! He said he couldn't see anything wrong and not to bother going ahead with what the roofer wants to do because he thinks he's just touting for business. Which just saved my step-dad £650!

They should have asked. I guess since you weren't in there, they didn't feel they had to.

That’s pretty annoying, I hope you can remind them to ask. And I also want to know if that’s Paul Gross from Due South?

Hard to tell from the photo. Sorry they entered your room, did they ask your step mom? I guess they figured they needed to see it and no one was in there it was okay to go in.

OK. Thank you very much. No, they didn't ask anyone. And it's not up to my Mum (she's my real Mum not my step Mum), It's my room not my Mums. It's my private space and they should have asked first wether I was in there or not.

@sharonelton Workmen can be very disrespectful in that way and swagger about a house as if they had some right so to do. And if they are doing some work and need to make use of the facilities they don’t see the need to pull the chain after themselves. I’m more concerned however about the rats. Now make yourself a nice camomile tea and slow down.

Now I know you didn't call this trader but they just turned up and claimed your roof needed work, I'm really concerned they are a scammer. Read this information from the consumers' rights organisation 'Which?' about doorstep scams: Especially the part about 'doorstep scams' - and show it to your Step-Dad as well. I'm copying the most relevant paragraph here just to highlight it: Rogue traders The scam: a trader will come to your home and offer to do some work for you at a special rate – this might be new paving or a new driveway. Another common tactic is to claim that you have a hole in your roof or your damage to your guttering – usually something that you can’t easily check yourself. They’ll say that it’s very urgent and put pressure on you to get the work done immediately. The reality: it’s highly likely that they’ve made up the problem. They might pretend to fix it or do a shoddy job. They’ll then charge you an extortionate amount for the ‘work’.

@sharonelton I am not being mean here, but how can you assess a roof problem potentially being there if you are not yourself a roofer? The reason you call a roofer is they know what they are looking at.

It could be dampness/mold forming because of a problem with the roof or gutters. Sorry they went into your bedroom without permission. Have a good day.

Reading through this discussion, I can see the roofer just called touting for business. Like others have said, I’d be wary of such cold calls. It’s usually obvious if there is a problem with the roof, and often it can be just blocked gutters than can cause damp in the corner, if indeed there is any damp. Either way, your step-dad should not be letting a stranger into your room without your permission. I’d be hitting the roof too!
