A Day Off of Sorts

I am always a bit loathe to say around here, "I am taking the day off," since it makes it sound like myLot is a job. Which, of course, it isn't. But still, there are days that, for whatever reason, you simply have to in fact, "take a day off." My dad has been in the hospital for a couple of weeks now. He went in to see his doctor for a cough and he just was feeling run down and weak. They told him to immediately go to the emergency room. He did and it was determined that he had pneumonia, but there seemed to be other issues going on as well. He has COPD and congestive heart failure. Conditions he has had for a while. He was having difficulty breathing. They ran several tests as they normally do and determined that he also suffered a mild heart attack. He has had several in the past. He had fluid around the heart, and they upped his medication to reduce it. They also did a heart cath and determined that he has two blockages on the left side and will require open heart surgery. The issue is, he is not in good enough health to do the surgery now, so he has to wait. My wife and I are going to drive to the hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri to visit with him along with my sister and her kids who will meet us there. It's about an hour and a half away. Being we will hit the road likely around 10am, this will take up most of my day. So, I will catch you all on the other side. My dad is 74.

That's his wife. But thank you. I think he will pull through, but he does have a long list of current health issues, and they are saying it may be three or so months before he can have the surgery. With those blockages, like he said, he's a walking time bomb.

@RebeccasFarm Has "hidden context" when you use the term "his wife" instead of something else. lol He looked better than I expected when I saw him and was in good spirits. It was great to see him.

Oh, I'm sorry. I am glad you are going to get to see him today. Heart problems are often very complex. I hope there is a solution to fix his heart soon. Take good care.

Yeah, it looks now like they are talking about doing more stents. I will try to keep people as updated as I can.

@MarieCoyle I guess it's better than the bypass option, but of course they (the doctors) would prefer to do the bypass but he's just not healthy enough for it.

I am very sorry for your father. Open heart surgery requires the patient to be in good health condition. I wish him to get well soon.

@porwest - I know that it's a difficult situation. My husband should need open heart surgery because of an aortic aneurysm, but he is not healthy enough to have surgery. Let's enjoy every day.

Yeah. That's the problem. He's not healthy enough for the surgery and so he has to sit it out. Those blockages make him a walking time bomb.

He was in good spirits, sitting up and seemed talktative and happy to see us. He thinks he will probably be in the hospital for another couple of days, and then he will have to work on getting healthy enough for a bypass.

@1creekgirl Yep, safe and fun, and it was nice hanging out a bit for dinner and some additional chats with my sister, brother in law and fam. Wish dad could have joined us for dinner, but it just wasn't possible for obvious reasons.

Thoughts and prayers are with you and your Dad Jim. Glad he is getting the medical attention he needs done. Even if surgery has to wait, glad he knows what he is facing now.

Based on our conversation, he is definitely more "aware" of what he needs to do. The fluid around the heart built up again, too, because he was taking less of his prescribed medication for it since it was making him pee too much and he didn't like that. He's back on it regular now.

@porwest My Dad used to do the same with his fluid meds. I stayed on him all the time. He finally got it.

Me too. In my last phone call, he was being apologetic and felt like he was saying goodbyes. I hate when they do that.
