There’s always at least one hiccup

We go home from our house-sit in an hour or two. Last night was interesting to say the least. We were part way through our dinner and the power went off. It came back on almost immediately but so did the burglar alarm. And was it loud! I thought my ear-drums would burst! We had no idea where to turn it off. Vin rang the owner but he didn’t have much idea either. He said other times it just gave a squeak to say it had reset itself then it fell silent. After trying whatever we could think of, we turned off the power and resigned ourselves to going to bed early and in the dark. Luckily, the newly married bride and groom arrived about then and eventually the guy cut the wires to the alarm. They’ll get someone out to repair it later. Poor Luka, the dog, didn’t know what to make of all the noise. I took him outside as it was probably more painful for his ears than for ours. I’m sorry the photo isn't better focussed. My little camera has trouble giving a sharp image of close-up subjects.

In such situation, better to cut the power off. I think the loud sound really hurt poor Luka.

It was just awful and for a while we couldn't figure out what we could do to stop the noise.

I would have just shut the power off to the house until someone could come look at the alarm and do something about it. I'm glad the owner didn't mind cutting the wires to it.

@JudyEv Oh, that wouldn't be fun... We have battery operated lights and flashlights galore here. I like playing with flashlights... *shrug*

@DaddyEvil We have torches at home but we weren't 'home' and wouldn't have been able to find much in the dark.

It got sorted in the end which was good. We were thinking we'd have to go to bed at 7 as we wouldn't have had any lights.

If the son hadn't come home the house would have been in darkness by 7pm. It would have made for a very long night.

Oh my what a horrible experience Judy..so sorry that happened. I am shocked they did not know how to turn it off. The poor dog.

They didn't build the house and obviously didn't know anything about the alarm system.

Oh that’s gotta hurt. Yes, probably the dog worse than you. I’m glad my system doesn’t have that problem. I know why the “wired” systems do that (in case a burglar tries turning the power off to bypass the alarm), but ouch!!!

The noise is so loud that burglars rarely hang around and apparently it's illegal to have two such alarms as it can burst ear-drums.

What an unpleasant ending to this house sit. Hopefully the next one will be perfect.

It might sound a bit negative but I always expect a bit of a hiccup at some point during our house-sits - and so far I haven't been disappointed! Once the 'hiccup' happens, then I relax more, if that makes sense.

The photo turned out great! What a sweet little face. Oh, the sound of that alarm might have driven me nuts. I’m glad they didn’t mind just cutting the wires altogether.

I took Luca outside. I really thought he'd get very upset and maybe start barking but he didn't really worry too much.

You have the adventures while house sitting that people can live without! I am amazed you'e still willing to do it personally. One time a cat I had here was desperate to go outside..He had been an outside kitty in a former life.Anyway, he was always trying to figure out a way to get outside. One day the alarm was set in here...he pulled open the door and got the shock of his life when that alarm went off in an ear splitting fashion...not sure he tried that particular door again..

I'm thinking we may not do too many more. I stress a bit about the pets and there always seems to be a bit of a problem of some sort. If you're there for a few days and counting the sleeps till you can go home then it might be time to give it away.

The noise of the burglar alarm did grate on you ! Staying in the dark is better than putting up with the noise.

Yikes that certainly sounds like a crazy and loud problem. Those alarms can certainly be loud and I hope the owners can figure out how to turn it off if it happens again. Luka is a beautiful dog and looks like he's posing for your camera

@JudyEv guess you were the guinea pigs and if it ever happens again the owner will know where the alarm is

The owner didn't even know where the alarm was. Vince was trying to tell him where the noise was coming from but he had no idea there was anything there. I think maybe he did know it was there but thought it was the smoke alarm.

@Marilynda1225 That's true. They'll have to get it reconnected if they want the alarm system operationall.

I'm sorry the burglar alarm went off. I'm sure it was hurtful to the dog's ears.

Hug Luka for me! He reminds me a lot of Rocky and Kitty our Rotties that we had 20 years ago. Rocky had punched the screen out of the van window where he laid and would hang his head out to get some cool air...and a LOT of pets! Kitty soon did the same thing, and what we thought were going to be guard dogs turned out to be absolute lovers!!!! The burglar alarm sounds a lot like my smoke detector. I tried doing stir fry one evening, and the alarm went off. I had to go down the hall and wave a magazine in front of it until it shut down. I tried the stir fry again with the same results. I once again waved a magazine in front of the fire detector until it shut down. By that time I had stir burn. The ceiling where the smoke detector is was built too high for me to reach the stupid detector! So, I don't do stir fries. The alarm is so loud that my neighbor below me came up to make sure I wasn't burning down the apartment building!

The alarms can be very loud indeed. Our BIL's alarm goes off if he cooks toast. Kitty and Rocky sound like great dogs. Dogs are so funny sometimes.

Oh my. How disturbing. I guess getting right to the point and cutting the wires solved it quickly.

@judyev Mine does that and it's most irritating. Took ages to figure it out, and we never ever use the alarm - we've nothing worth stealing except my wife's piano and no-one will be carrying that out of the house easily.

That would have been quite unsettling. Cutting the wires is the last resort to silence it. What a relief then!

Oh no that would be something different to deal with. I know they are loud when they go off. There is a church across the street from us and when theirs goes off it is loud here, I can imagine how much more so being in the building itself. I worked at one place that had an alarm system but the mother lived next door. Before I came and after I left she would set the alarm so I didn't have to. What a sweet looking dog

I took the dog outside and away from the noise as best I could. I had to go back in to help Vince and of course the dog wanted to stay with me. But we got it sorted in the end.
