My first ever really mean checker at Trader Joe's. Was racism involved?

When I go to Trader Joe's, I know that the checkers will be nice. It's a part of why I shop there often. A young friend of mine from Guitar Center now works there, and says that checkers at TJ's are actually trained to be friendly and funny, as the need arises. Just now, I encountered my first ever Really Grumpy Checker at Trader Joe's. I put my stuff (three items) on the little slide out shelf, next to some flowers that were already there. There were no other customers there. The checker was a younger Asian-looking gal. She said, "Can I cut my friend?" I said, "Of course!" She (the other customer) had appeared from somewhere and had only two small flower pots with her. She was an older Asian lady. But the woman rang me up and stared daggers at me. I said, "Why did you ring me up? I said of course you could ring up your friend." She was not having it. She continued to stare daggars at me. If there had been a misunderstanding, she refused to consider it. Should I report her? I have been going to this TJ's for over 20 years and usually have pleasant (and sometimes funny) experiences there. Photo is of the Nevada wasteland.

That would be entirely up to you... We weren't there and didn't have the experience. If you're asking if I'd report someone for not being nice when they were ringing me up, no, I wouldn't. I would just check who the cashier is when I'm going to a register and avoid that person from then on. We avoid one checker at Walmart and one at Price Cutter when we shop in those stores. Life is too short to put up with pissy people when you don't have to deal with them. I'm sure they'll get themselves fired sooner or later without my input.

@TheHorse Everything is normal here. I woke up to go pee and am just doing notifications and will go back to sleep again in a bit. Please be careful. I hear traffic out there can be fun.

@DaddyEvil Mid-afternoon heading toward SF shouldn't be that bad. Getting home will be difficult.

Geez, I've never encountered a TJ's employee like that! If she continues to be that way, surely she won't last there anyway.

If she acts that way again, I might mention it to someone.

How very odd. But I probably wouldn't bother reporting her, it's hard to make an official complaint about a facial expression.

Yeah, I've already let it go. I had a couple of positive social interactions today when I was out and about.

It wouldn’t hurt to say something if you’re up for it. It is weird what happened. There was no need to be rude especially since you said OK.

I probably wouldn't report an isolated incident. If it happens again with the same checker I would. I usually ask these people, "Are you having a bad day?" That usually straightens them out. Have a great day.

It depends how the store handles the complains. Should I report someone at Aldi for something like this, the person would lose the job... it's up to you.

@TheHorse I often avoid to report to the manager because I feel bad, but some people deserve a lesson.

I hate getting grumpy check-out people. Most we encounter are really good.

If she continues with that attitude she may not last long as an employee. I normally go to the same cashiers at the store.
