It’s always worth asking!

This year I decided not to be part of the chorus for the pantomime, but to help out backstage instead, making scenery and props. They needed more help as a couple of people who have been coming along for years have suddenly stopped, and the remainers were getting a bit stressed. One key thing needed for ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is a spinning wheel. I’m sure it can’t be that difficult to make one, or at least something that looks the part, from a bicycle wheel and a few bits of wood or something along those lines, but with a reduced workforce and limited time of course it would be easier if we could find one ready made. I was told that people had been looking on Ebay, Facebook marketplace etc. but so far the ones available were either extremely expensive or very far away, or both. So I thought I would ask on Freegle, just in case. After all you never know. So I wrote a ‘wanted’ post asking for a spinning wheel, working or not, that was no longer needed or at least wasn’t needed until February, and lo and behold, a kind lady offered to lend us one! When I went round to pick it up she explained that she didn’t really know anything about spinning, but was helping her friend clear her mother’s house and had offered to sell some things. She was sure it wouldn’t matter if it wasn’t sold until next year. So we are now the proud temporary caretakers of a very nice Ashford Traveller, as it turns out! You say kind lady but……Watch you don’t prick your finger! If we don’t hear from you for a while, we’ll have to fear the worst. You’ll then need a handsome Prince to come and break the spell. In walks a handsome man @Orson_Kart

The odd thing about the story is that there is absolutely no reason why this or any other spinning wheel should have a sharp point anywhere on it. We are going to have to create one specially.

@Orson_Kart Yes, that's about it. But the spindle is just like a giant cotton real and not sharp at all.

My grandmother had one, they look so pretty. I confess that I also do not know how to use one. @Orson_Kart is right, be careful not to prick your finger.

It seems fairly straightforward, here's a useful tutorial (using the same style of wheel)

How good is that? My mother had an Ashford and did a lot of spinning in her time.

@JudyEv I hadn't heard of that pattern, had to look it up. I'm sure it made a pretty shawl!

@Fleura I crocheted for a little shop once and was given some spun camel hair to make up into a shawl. I used a Solomon's Knot pattern which made the yarn go a long way as it was expensive. Someone local had spun it up.

It was very generous of her wasn't it? Maybe she'll even come to the show to see her spinning wheel on stage!

Not everyone has a spinning wheel to loan out. I am glad you could help with finding props that were needed.

No indeed they don't! I was quite surprised to actually be offered one!

How kind of her to loan it out! And what luck that you asked, and someone actually had one. I have a very old fashioned, vintage looking phone clock, and it would make a perfect prop. My aunt does frequent plays in her church, and I was hoping she could use it. It just screams to be used in a play. So far, no takers.

Well, aren't you lucky! That's a lovely-looking spinner but I can't see how you can turn straw into gold with one of those things... Oh, wrong story.

It’s a pretty one. My father made my mama a spinning wheel. It’s still in their home.

A lot of people seem to buy them as a rustic item for the home. I wonder if there are many who even know how to use one?

I do, now Have a look here: And incidentally there was a person spinning at one of the folk festivals we went to this summer. Another Freegler suggested I contact the local guild of weavers and spinners, which I had never even heard of before, so no doubt there are other people who know what to do!

I don't think it is an antique, I think it's quite a modern one.

You have the right idea. Maybe someone has something like this kicking around that they would love to have repurposed, and what a great cause.
