We Will Have the Soups

Okay, in order for that title to work, you have to say it like Ving Rhames on the Arby's commercials when he says, "We have the meats."
As I am sure everyone would imagine, we had our Thanksgiving last night, and I was the lucky winner to take home the turkey carcass and the ham bone from our dinner. Nobody ever wants them, and everyone knows I'm a stickler and I'm also cheap.
Don't dare anyone even think about throwing that stuff away! So, can anyone say "soup?"
I will make a pot of turkey, noodle soup first and then a batch of bean soup later. I kept the carcass in the fridge since I will get to that post haste. Maybe tomorrow or Sunday.
I froze the ham bone, and we'll have the bean soup in a week or two.

That's what we do too . . . we take the carcass and make soup out of it (no one else in the family cares to do it). You get a great broth and the rest of the meat falls off of it . . . nothing goes to waste. There is an extra step I don't do . . . but you can dry the bones and grind them up into bone meal for your garden. Maybe I'll try that this time!

I have never used the bones for anything and haven't maintained a garden for a few years. Just don't have enough of a green thumb. But yes, you boil that carcass and there's meat galore and it makes such a tasty, rich broth that doesn't need much doctoring. Very good stuff. I don't understand people who don't boil the carcass and make soup. Even if I cook a whole chicken or buy a rotisserie chicken, I will always make it into soup or at least a stock or broth.

I’ve always done the same,if I go to a family member’s house and they have the turkey carcass or a big ham bone, you can bet I take it home if they don’t want it!
My grandmothers both taught me to cook. This was just what we did. Bones make such good broth. Good for you, Jim.

@porwest I made our soup - but threw out the bones after . . . I decided I didn't have time to clean, dry and grind bones . I added loads of vegetables and Tday leftovers to our soup - tasty goodness! Yep - we do that with chicken too!

That sounds delish to me. I’m also frugal.

I often make split pea soup in the Crockpot. So easy and so good! And of course there must be a ham bone!

@MarieCoyle I have never made it in the crockpot, but I know many people that do. Maybe the next batch. I love split pea soup by the way.

I have always loved it. One of my grandmothers taught me to make it when I was little. Hint...it's delicious with cornbread or corn muffins!

That's what I say. Seems like such a waste. The carcass always makes for a very tasty and rich broth just that makes the soup taste that much better. Plus, there's always a ton of meat hiding in the crevices that you get to use when you boil it off. I can usually get a couple of cups worth of meat.
