Candles for Christmas - and other occasions

You might all wonder why I’m writing about this photo but I found it intriguing. These candles were on all the tables at the restaurant we went to the other night. They look very realistic but the ‘flame’ is lit by a battery. You might be able to see a little wire going through the base of the flame. The heat from the battery light causes the flame to move one way and a tiny counterweight at the bottom of the flame brings it back to centre so the flame seems to flicker back and forth. I find candles messy and potentially dangerous but I might look out for some like this.

I love true candles, the hue of a true candle is hard to copy.

I was taught to be cautious with candles etc, I suppose mom's family didn't like electricity when it was offered in the early 1900s, mom was born in 1916

@rebelann I can remember carrying lamps to the bathroom to have a wash before bedtime. My Mum was born in 1910. I was 10 before Mum got a washing machine.

@RebeccasFarm Vin's sister and husband arrive today around lunchtime then his younger brother and his daughter on Boxing Day. They'll all stay a day or two.

I use artificial, battery-operated candles myself. They have that “flickering” motion like a “real” candle, but without the danger of burning the house down.

@JudyEv — I have a couple that have built-in timers: they stay on for about eight hours then shut themselves off. Battery operated, too!

Those are the ones I'm talking about. I think they're a great idea. I don't know how many house fires I've heard about that have been caused by candles.

That is pretty. I like candles but only burn them when I can stay near or if the electricity is off.

That's the safest way to go. It's too easy for curtains or cloths/clothes to catch fire.

@JudyEv We had a barn cat stick her tail in the fire outside one time. Thankfully we were there and seen her.

Some candles just smell so good. I am burning a Yankee Balsam and Cedar candle right now, and it as such a nice, woodsy fragrance.

Most times 'real' is better. I was intrigued by how they made the 'flame' appear to flicker.

We have some similar battery operated "candles" at home. The real candles are a bit f hassle although we use them during the Diwali time. May be you can try such battery operated ones at your home.
