The dog and the coffee shop.

This morning I went for a walk and I noticed two ladies and a dog in front of me. One of the ladies was talking to the dog who did not appear to be moving. The dog was stood very still just like a statue even though the lady holding the lead was obviously trying to get it to walk. As I went past both ladies looked at me and smiled, I smiled back and I looked down at the dog. One of the ladies then explained that the dog was not moving because he wanted to go to the coffee shop, and they were going in the opposite direction. I sort of laughed at this and then I told her that she would have to carry the dog. Then , after I had past them I had a thought. I wondered if dogs were actually allowed in coffee shops.

I suppose the dog is allowed to that coffee shop and the dog receives a treat when they go there.

@LadyDuck That is nice, was it a dog biscuit or an ordinary one?

Yes, dogs always know when the treats are going to be dished out. There was a pet shop near us that would always give dogs a treat when the owners brought something. I suppose it was good for custom.

They have a dog with good tasteThe first time I saw people bring their dogs, sans leashes, into a restaurants and coffee shops was in Rotterdam. I thought it was weird, but apparently it is a normal thing to do there. Here, I've seen people bring them in on leashes at some coffee shops, hotels, restaurants and even supermarkets.

I heard the other day that, in some cases, visitors can take patient`s dogs into hospital .It is supposed to make the patient feel less stress if they can see their pet .I have never seen anybody take a dog into a supermarket, apart from guide dogs, but I think many of the garden centres allow dogs inside. Whenever I go past my local supermarket there is nearly always one or maybe two dogs tied up outside. They sit there so patiently waiting for their owners to come out of the shop. Every time the door opens the dogs look up hopefully, and then they get excited if it is their owner who comes out.

That's rather weird. Why did he want to go to the coffee shop? Did he get treats?

@lazydaizee .......Our old Heeler dog used to go across the alley and get handouts at the Seven-Eleven when the manager was cleaning out the burritos. He loved them. Maybe this dog had gotten some handouts before and thought he might again.

@celticeagle I expect it was something like that, dogs are very clever. How old was your dog and what was the dog`s name?

I said perhaps he wants a cup of coffee, but I don`t think dogs can drink coffee. I used to know a dog who was given tea to drink and she used to love it. Maybe they gave him a biscuit to eat while they enjoyed their drinks.

Pets are pretty good at making their wishes known, aren't they? Some cafes here put down water bowls for dogs but usually only at outside tables.

Most of the shops here do not allow it because it is something to do with health and safety. However, saying that I do know that we have dog friendly pubs and hotels.

It is something to do with health and safety, but not everybody likes dogs so they would not want to have another customers dog sniffing around while they are trying to enjoy a coffee. Some dogs have unsociable habits and this could be off putting too.

Luckily it was a very small dog, but I could not tell you what breed it was. It did look very strong because the lady could not get it to walk in the right direction where she wanted to go.

They need Graham Hall! Do you watch Dog's Behaving Very Badly? It's on channel 4 on Tuesday's at 8:00pm and a new series has just started. On Tuesday, in the first episode of the new series, there was a dog who did not like to go for walks. He would stop and lie down with his bum in the air and they called it a "splat!" His owners thought he was scared but Graham said he was just attention seeking and he was playing them! He only got up when they went to pick him up and carry him! So Graham said when he does a "splat" just stand there and ignore him, don't pick him up or anything. Eventually the dog got up and started walking again, and they gave him attention and praised him when he was doing the right thing!

I have not seen this programme before, but I have watched one where rescued dogs are found new homes. I think the show is called The Dog House. People go to a dog rescue centre and the staff there have to match the people with an available dog. They do a good job and they normally get the right people for the dog.

@sharonelton I will look out for this programme, it sounds like fun. There are not many really good programmes on television these days so it will make a change.

@lazydaizee Yes, I've seen The Dog House. That's a very good programme too. You should watch Dog's Behaving Very Badly. It is really good. It was funny with the dog who didn't want to walk when they were dragging him across their laminate floor! And Graham is really good at training these dogs.
