Sloppy Toast

Perhaps it's a strange thing in our house? Neither my wife or I really care all that much for Sloppy Joe sandwiches. But we do enjoy the Sloppy Joe mixture. In fact, Manwich is our preferred go to when it comes to that. So, as such, we simply find different ways to make use of the stuff. Such as having Manwich loaded baked potatoes often as a main course dinner. Or, this little concoction that I simply call Sloppy Toast. I brown the ground beef like normal and drain off the excess grease. Then I add in onion and green pepper and let that cook up a bit. Next, in with the Manwich Sloppy Joe sauce and just a wee bit of water—probably about a third to a half a can (but I always eyeball it closely because I want the sauce to remain fairly thick). Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes or so. Next up, toast two slices of bread and place a slice of provolone cheese on each one and slather a heaping helping of the Sloppy Joe mixture on top of the bread. Voila! Sloppy Toast. We wound up having three slices of the stuff each and it was delicious. We had a salad on the side. What went on your dinner table last night?

It looks good. I had spaghetti squash tuna casserole. I have leftovers for today.

How do you make that Valerie? I'm not sure that I would eat tuna with that but I might try to think of something else to put with it.

@MarshaMusselman I would assume, and I could be wrong, that you'd make the same way as you would a regular tuna casserole. You're just substituting the noodles with the squash.

@porwest I'm eating the leftovers as I'm working here. I don't mind the seeds, but I wanted something that was easy to eat. I put it through the food processor on the chop setting and it's perfect. Otherwise, all those stings were hard to work with even though I really liked it.

No. But that does sound good. I still would not eat it like a sandwich. But putting some coleslaw on this would not be bad at all.

I figured, if Sloppy Joe is just Sloppy Joe on two pieces of bread, why can't you get away with basically an open Sloppy Joe sandwich? lol

@Marilynda1225 The last time I did try to eat a Sloppy Joe sandwich I took one bite and all the mixture fell out. I wound up forking it anyway. It was a literal forking mess! lol

I do like eggplant, but the only way I ever really eat it is in an eggplant parmigiana dish.

@Beestring I guess when I buy an eggplant I only ever think of the parmigiana. Maybe I need to rethink that because eggplant IS good.

@porwest I love eggplant, cooked in whatever way. In particular, eggplants with garlic sauce, eggplant with minced pork.

@porwest Haha, I focus more on having a healthier meal now, my father passed away due to a diabetic so technically I have the genetics for it so I try to eat less meat and carbo in exchange for vegetables. Yet, I really would like to try such sloppy toast.

Interesting that your talk about putting it on baked potatoes. It sounded like your call that sloppy toast, which didn't make sense to me. But then, your meal didn't use the potatoes at all but toast. So your cook up the same mixture when putting it on your baked potatoes? That idea reminds me of a Coney dog with the potato instead of the hot dog. Last night I keep things simple because I went to my sister's to work on a puzzle. So I made my husband noodles with Alfredo sauce, the latter note from scratch. And I had cauliflower with the Alfredo. We're both had green beans. And later I had a salad.

@porwest I keep frozen cauliflower in hand but not much broccoli. I wonder how the broccoli would be in my creamy cheese and... Usually cauliflower meal I make. I might have to try that.

Yeah, I just figured I'd toss in mention of the potato thing we make just for good measure. But yeah, it's essentially the same mixture, just on toast. When I make it for the potatoes I usually don't put in the onions or peppers though since the potato will likely already have that on it plus some cheese, bacon bits and sour cream. Your meal sounds good too. I would never think to use cauliflower in an Alfredo. But why not? I do it with broccoli.

I've never tried Manwich. I had a simple supper. Canned white kidney beans with carrot chunks and a faux chicken cutlet on the side. The fake chicken cutlet had cheddar cheese in its middle. And a little piece of my home made cake.

It has been a good few years since I've had a Sloppy Joe. A little while back I experimented making my own without the mix. Not bad, but something is missing

The sandwich is something I just can't do. Which I realize makes no sense if I am eating basically a Sloppy Joe with THIS dish. But it's just too hard of a sandwich to eat and actually enjoy considering how "sloppy" it is. lol

that stuff is too rich for me & hubby loves anything that he can eat without thinking what it does to his insides. I had some baked chicken (without the skin) & some cottage cheese for desert, with a fruit cup mixed in it.

It CAN be a little rich. No doubt about it. But we don't eat it often enough for that to matter. I agree that avoiding foods that "do things to your insides" is probably a good idea. lol Although beans do things to my insides, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying them.
