An enjoyable student at Guitar Center today!

This kid may have an ear comparable to mine! He is about 10-years-old and has been my guitar student for about four months. Recently , he decided guitar wasn't enough, so Santa bought him a bass guitar. Then, last week, he appeared for his lesson with a banjo in his hands. He's at that age where I can teach him the Happy Birthday Song and he'll be happy, but he loves Nirvana. Today, he wanted to play Nirvana on his banjo, a bluegrass instrument. His dad had bought him a Nirvana songbook, and together we figured out how to play Come As You Are on guitar and banjo. By the end of the lesson, we had a nice version ready and performed it for his dad and a couple of my coworkers. He even "backed off" and let me take a lead on guitar! Imagine this song played well on banjo and acoustic guitar by a grumpy old man (me) and a 10-year-old student barely big enough to hold and play a full-sized banjo (him). There's an element of humor to it, but I'm serious when I say this kid has some "dangerous" talent and could go far in music if he chooses to. @Vandana7, if you want to get rich, keep an eye on this kid and volunteer to edit whatever slides he chooses. Photo is of my "bad ass" acoustic Collings OM-1. I don't have a (loaded) gun.

I really do think this kid can be something special. He reminds me of me, but with me as a teacher.

Often those who are successful in music, start their career very young. Good luck to this boy.

@TheHorse I agree that it is unusual for such a young boy to be bossy.

Thanks. He's really fun to teach. He's also a bit "bossy," which is amusing at his age.

@LadyDuck He is very "organized." I could "go all psychological" on him, but I won't. Hey, maybe he'd make a good Swiss person!

As if you would let me get rich. LOL But I am sorry to say Nirvana is not my type of music.

Heh. It is not mine either. It was a part of the so called "grunge" movement of the '90s. Playing a familiar grunge riff on banjo and acoustic guitar has humor to it.

I don't really know Nirvana. Some of these kids pick some pretty fancy songs sometimes.
