Somehow we have come away on holiday with a very limited supply of underwear for our daughter: we think it’s sitting in a bag at our from door at home. She is quite annoyed at us, and even more so now because of my attempt to redeem the situation As soon as we arrived at the cottage in the wilds of Donegal I put on a load of dirty washing into the washing machine including three pairs of our daughter’s pants. However there is no dryer and the Donegal rain precludes drying on the clothes line outside. My brilliance kicked in in response to the predicament and we took the three pairs of laundered unmentionables with us when we went out for dinner. We got a table beside a radiator and decorated it with wet knickers when no-one was looking, and disguised them with menus - genius. The only flaw in the solution was that when we got into the car to go home after the meal we realised that we had forgotten to lift the laundry. No way was I going back in there to ask the waitress for the underwear I’d left hanging on the radiator. Would you?
