My sunflowers are coming up!

I did a bit of Spring planting a few weeks ago. I think I put corn, sunflower and green bean seeds into the soil. Yesterday I noticed that some sunflowers are coming up. Because it hasn't rained in a few days, I'll probably start watering my balcony garden. My Winter snow peas are starting to die off, and I noticed that I have a few snow peas that still need harvesting. I'll see if I can find a photo of the sunflowers I grew in Oakland with the kids at the mother-and-child drug rehab program where I worked. Teaching kids gardening ("farming") is big happy fun.

You should start a sunflower farm. They look good and healthy on the photo.

Those were from a few years ago at the rehab. My little plants are just poking through now.

@TheHorse ooh. Alright. Let's give them another one year. They should look like those on the photo.

I wish I had known you in person. You and I do think alike about teaching kids music and gardening apart from sports.

I teach sports too. I just invite kids into my world. Except for the unwholesome parts.

We got a lot of rain. Not that I am complaining. Just going to have a day or two of cold.

I will check my soil later this morning. I see sun and scattered clouds outside right now.

@1creekgirl Gardens are cheery. Especially when kids are involved in growing them.

What has been most cheery for me is teaching kids how to garden/farm!

I love sunflowers. I remember standing in the driveway as a kid, eating the sunflower seeds. Have a good weekend.

If we planted anything this early, it would get frozen. Here, it is highly recommended to not plant before Mother's Day. Enjoy!

@TheHorse It's supposed to be 58 tomorrow. Our problem is the nights get too cold still.

We had majestic ones in Oakland. The ones on my balcony are humble but I still enjoy them.

I do too. They're full of life. Just in case I sound too happy, here's a song by Greg Brown in which he uses sunflowers as a metaphor. Call me Eeyore.

Those were from the garden in Oakland. It was amazing to me what the soil there (brimming with nutrients, it seems) could yield.

Sunflowers are fun because you can practically see them growing. The flowers are big and birds (and people) love the seeds.

@TheHorse It is exciting for kids to see the sunflowers spring up so quickly and they don't need to wait for weeks to see a bit of green popping up.

Yes to teaching kids about gardening. We need more you. My gardener helper says our last frost date is May 8th- kind of depressed me. Meantime I plant Spring things like pansies and broccoli.

@TheHorse Let's see if I can spell this correctly: nasturiams. Anyway, these flowers are easy to grow from seeds, pretty and edible.
