4/6/24 - Update on My Husband

My husband said that PT did not go too well yesterday. His knee and hip went out on him; and he had to sit down. It's going to take a while until he has enough strength to walk on his own. I think I'm getting the runaround on his transfer to the other facility. The Social Worker says that she faxed the Referral to the new facility; but the new facility says they didn't get it. The Admissions Director said to have the Social Worker call her. I left that message for the Social Worker...we'll see if she calls her. We got a rundown of charges from our insurance company for my husband's stay at the rehab facility. It was $5,800 for one week with $120 per week being charged to us. This can't be right?!!! If it is, my husband should have a phone, get immediate response when he puts his call light on, should have excellent food and should be treated like a king! I was unable to visit him yesterday because his godson/cousin took his truck; and it's too high for me to get into it. I might be able to go next week with his 2nd cousin. If not, I can call her mother. Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

Sounds like the runaround to me. You're right! He should be treated like a king. I hope they get his transfer taken care of soon.

I am not surprised by the cost, I know that it's very expensive also here, but patients receive a good treatment and they have a personal phone, of course they pay for the calls. I think that your husband cannot recover until he stays there, he is too depressed to get his strength back.

@LindaOHio Well, I was pretty sure of that. He has been bedridden for 9 weeks, a doctor told me I was told me that it would take approximately 10 days to recover from every day in bed.

Hubby says he thinks it will be longer than 2 weeks until he's home.

@LadyDuck I heard it was 3 days for every day. I hope it's not 10 days. It will be forever until he gets home.

Long term care is even for rehab is very expensive. As far as fax goes, we have at least one doctor who wants Bob's records hand carried because faxes are unreliable. In this more modern time it is actually more efficient to scan and upload a document and send it through e-mail. Last year the school was trying to send some faxes for me and had this happen. It still could be a delaying tactic.

Yes, people should have good service in there, but they do not. I have heard so many horror stores of rehab facilities and nursing homes. Keep calling the social worker. She is slacking. If you have to report them to the state.

Why couldn't the admissions director call the social worker herself without making you do all the legwork? What's happening with the VA?

Because she doesn't want to call the Social Worker. I still have more information to get together for the VA.

That’s ridiculous! A nursing home (full-time residency) isn’t that much. I think what they do — and I’ve harped on this as being a MAJOR issue that needs to be corrected in medical treatment — is they write down an arm and a leg as the “charge,” then they accept $120 from you, the agreed-upon amount from the insurance company (let’s say $1180), and “write off” the rest. If they’re going to TAKE $1300 for the services then that’s what they should be listing as the charge, NOT $5800!!!!! Anyway, sorry for the rant, and sorry that he had a rough day. I guess we all have rough days in therapy, or the therapist wouldn’t be happy.

My mother never broke her hip but did have each of them replaced and had to stay in a rehabilitation facility for a couple of months following her surgery. She did fall once a few days after her surgery. She also had to rely on a cane for walking. I wonder if they have tried a device like that on your hubby, or if hip replacements differ in cases like this.

He lost all his strength from lying in a hospital bed for almost 2 months. He has to regain his strength to walk again.
