Overpaying at the store

I went shopping today to my local Russian store. When I was checking out I noticed that the jumbo eggs I usually get scanned at $4.19 instead of $3.99. I told the cashier this and after scanning the rest of the items he went back to the shelf to check the price and adjusted it after coming back to the register. I didn't notice anything wrong on the receipt until I came back home and looked it over again. Turned out there were two mistakes. He scanned my loose crimini (baby bella) mushrooms as portobello mushrooms. Instead of $4.49 per pound it was $4.99 per pound. And then my green zucchini was scanned as another type of squash. Instead of 69 cents per pound it was $1.99 per pound. We paid a total of $6.65 for the two items instead of $3.85. That's a difference of $2.80. I couldn't let it slide so had hubby drive me back to the store for a price adjustment. The lady took off those two items and rescanned them and credited the difference back on the card. Everything seemed fine, the items being as they should be, so I left the store. But when I got in the car and looked at the receipt again I noticed that the zucchini scanned at 99 cents per pound instead of 69 cents per pound. And the weight of the mushrooms was .55 pounds instead of .56 pounds it was initially. My credited amount was $2.26 and not the $2.80 it should have been. I should have gone back to the store again but was no longer in the mood to do so. But I am still left with a bad feeling of overpaying, even though the difference is only 56 cents.

It’s a bummer, I know. I guess we have gotten to the place where we have to double and triple check our receipts before we leave the store. Because being cheated stinks, even if it is a small amount.

I am still upset over it. And whatever went back on the card will credit in two days. If only I had noticed it right away. Hard to keep track of everything being scanned when there are many items. At least I am glad we got some money back. And the weird thing is I got the zucchini there yesterday for my mom and it scanned at 69 cents per pound. Wonder why today it scanned for 99 cents per pound even though the shelf label still had yesterday's price. It didn't hit me to check the price it scanned for today when the lady was doing the price adjustment.

@lovebuglena That’s going to hurt their business if they keep it up.

@AmbiePam I remember still seeing the big price sticker for 69 cents per pound for the zucchini on the shelf. Maybe the price went up and they haven't updated the price sticker yet. Who knows. I wonder how many people end up overpaying because they do not check their receipts.

I have heard of this happening before. A person really has to watch. If people don't bring it up to the store when it happens it will just continue. Prices are already too high. They should not be allowed to get away with it.

@lovebuglena .......I have heard of this happening in other stores. I make a cashier check if it were warranted.

Prices on the shelf should match the scanned prices. Perhaps they can't keep up with updating shelf prices and system prices at the same time. At least it is good that they do a price adjustment. There have been instances where a cashier says the scanned price is the correct price and do nothing.

Is there a barcode on the items and scans the wrong price or the cashier has an outdated list of the prices and types it at the till? It sounds very strange , you need a calculator next time to double check everything.

For the produce each item has a 4 digit code you enter to weigh/scan the items. For other things it is the barcode. When an item scans at a price different (higher) from that on the shelf it could be that perhaps prices have gone up and the shelf price was not updated yet.

@lovebuglena Oh I see, so the barcodes might have actually been correct! It seems that something is not coordinated properly in the shop, they are either losing money or overcharging. Sorry to hear that you had this issue. I always check the receipt when I go home. I check the scanned priced too if I know there is an offer to make sure it's applied.

@besweet On Saturday I was at the store and I got my mom the zucchini. It scanned correctly at 69 cents per pound. So, when the lady was doing a price adjustment yesterday, I didn’t pay attention to what it scanned for as I expected it to be 69 cents per pound as the day before. And I told her right away what it should have scanned for when I came in. That was a mistake. I should have still paid attention to the price on the register screen instead of just the item that appeared.

I hate overpaying for anything and I never do. Never. But I get everything delivered and can get on the phone to customer service if I need to. But it rarely comes to that. Sorry you got overcharged.

@RebeccasFarm It’s not like they are paid based on how many customers they check out or how fast they do it. Take your time. There is no rush.

You are very lucky then. I hate it when I shop at a store and they scan things way too fast. Like what’s the rush? Can’t find things that are wrong when they rush things.

I check the ticket every time before leaving the store, as it happened int he past that products marked on sale were scanned at their original price. Gas is expensive, getting back to the store costs money.

@lovebuglena Often those receipts are confusing. I love where I can scan myself the items and pay going out, at least I can check if everything I scan is correct.

@LadyDuck in this case self checkout is good, thought if there are issues it can take a while before someone comes over to help.

I do that as well. Sometimes it is hard to catch everything when the receipt is too long and the way things are organized on it are confusing.

Good thing that this store is close to our house. It took less than five minutes probably to drive back there.

People working at the store as cashiers should know their fruits and vegetables. They can’t mix thing up. Like if they see crimini mushrooms they should know that it’s crimini mushrooms and not portobello ones. And they should be able to tell the difference between parsley and cilantro. Etc. It’s one thing to mix up a code by mistake. It’s another to not be able to tell the items apart.

@kareng it’s probably hard to remember all the code numbers. But they gotta make sure that what they are entering is correct. And if it’s wrong fix it.

I hate when things like that happen but at lest you did get credited and it was much better than what they had actually charged you,

@just4him The scale shouldn’t have weighed it differently then. Weird.

I don’t get why the weight of the mushrooms decreased from .56 lbs to .55 lbs. It makes no sense. Did she enter the weigh manually and made a mistake or did the scale work differently? I am glad that at least we got most of the price difference back.

And if they're making mistakes that you pick up on, how many mistakes are they making that you, and others, don't notice? Not good really.

@lovebuglena I'd probably not want to bother to go back to the store but as you say if everyone does this it will keep happening.

I wonder that as well. How many mistakes go unnoticed? And how many mistakes do people not bother to deal with? Like they can see that they were overcharged but they do nothing about it, figuring that the difference is small so why bother. But this shouldn’t be done. If people let it slide then this will keep happening.

@Hannihar here, if you tell them the shelf price says a certain amount they go check and then if it says what you told them they adjust the price.

I don’t know if the price of the zucchini actually went up. But if the shelf price says one thing and it scans for something else they should honor the shelf price.

It really does, epically when you have to go back to the cashier or to customer service to deal with it. I remember when I purchased fresh mozzarella and it was scanned incorrectly. I went back to get a price adjustment and it took half an hour if not more for it to get done. There were no people in front of me. It just took the lady a long time to figure out how to do it. Whatever she kept trying to do wouldn’t work. She finally ended up calling someone and that person guided her over the phone how to do it. And even that didn’t work on the first try. It’s really best to catch mistakes during scanning, before you actually pay.

Scam or not you really have to pay close attention to what the cashier is doing. Many cashiers don’t pay attention to what they are doing. Like if something scans incorrectly, for whatever reason, they don’t catch it.

@lovebuglena Yea I watch what goes on with all that stuff I rather just scan it myself but when you have a buggy full it takes a bit to do it all.

It's not fun to overpay, but that's just a small ammount. I think you can allow yourself a chance to breathe.

In a way it is true. But on the other hand, even that small amount can be used toward buying something else.

I hate overpaying, even by a little bit. And it’s the whole principle of it. Even if the difference in price is very small, why should I let it slide and overpay?

Inflation is hitting all parts of the world, I think the Russia Ukraine war has affected the ease of availablity of some items that were cheap.

That can surely be the case, especially if the items are imported from there.
