I´m glad that lunch is ready: I´ll make orange and carrot jam.

I don´t know whether when I was a child oranges were too expensive or there were so many that turned out not sweet enough. But my grandma always made a mixture of cooked carrot and orange jam. She first peeled very thinly the green outside and cut it in long and thing pieces while the carrots were cooking. Then she used a knife to take the inside of the orange, leaving all the white parts as a discarded book. She also took away the pits (many then) and mixed everything together with the cooked carrots that had been mashed with a fork. My grandma measured this mixture 1 to 1 with sugar and let it stay in the pot for a half an hour. The cooking (simmering) started then. And she never cared about preserving it. We would eat it before something bad happened to it. Now I´ll make jam with 2 big oranges and one big carrot. If it works, I´ll make more. But first, I´ll eat lunch.

I've never heard of carrot and orange jam before. I always make marmalade, which needs the bitter Seville oranges and in the same way you slice up the peel and then use the insides without the white parts.

Maybe the carrot was just to extend the amount of jam. Perhaps oranges were very expensive.

I think so. After all, then we were 3 kids and my parents did not buy cheese or ham. Thinking about it, it must have been a money problem. My father helped his 2 younger brothers through college.

@marguicha We used to have 'pie' melons here which would come up in the paddocks. They were used in jams to increase the quantity without changing the flavour.
