Welcome back, Pat Ballard! He wrote yesterday’s 1954 hit, and waddaya know, he’s back! He probably lived the rest of his life (he died in 1960) quite comfortably on the royalties of that and this, his better-known composition. Let’s go back seventy years for this gem. Mr. Sandman - The Chordettes Hey, @Scarred4Lyfe ? Tell your hoomin this is NOT the same as “Enter Sandman.” This song was a hit three times in 1954. The original version was by Vaughn Monroe and his orchestra. I guess I’m used to this version, but the Monroe version works well as a “sandman,” because it dang near put me to sleep listening to it. The Four Aces, a male vocal quartet, covered it, using the Chordettes’ arrangement. Much bouncier. But neither of them had the “lots of wavy hair like Liberace” line!! The Chordettes are remembered for this and their other million-seller, “Lollipop.” Their rendition is bouncy, happy, and fun (especially thanks to the Liberace line that wasn’t [obviously, since they were male versions] in the other renditions). Picky Wedia says this version was in the John Candy film Uncle Buck. So if you saw that, you heard this. This is one of the great, enjoyable songs from the 50s. Mr. Sandman Written by Pat Ballard Recorded by the Chordettes Released as a single, 1954 Make him the cutest that I’ve ever seen:

@FourWalls There was a lot of good songs about, way before the sixties when I started listening to the likes of The Beatles and The Beach Boys. I now listen to “oldies” radio stations that play a lot of great 50’s tunes. Many I’ve never heard before and love.

This is a very old one, but a song that I liked as I liked many songs by the Chordettes.

You bet! Well, this version. I didn’t care for the Vaughn Monroe Orchestra version…however, I didn’t hear it until long after hearing this one. It’s hard to top this version.

And then there’s the candy-colored clown they call the sandman who tiptoes in my room every night just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper “go to sleep, there are lots of songs with references to sandman.”

These OLD “oldies” had a magic about them. I think it’s the fun innocence. Glad you enjoyed it.
