Times have changed in the theatre too

We travelled to a nearby city yesterday and attended a play last night in their state-of-the-art theatre. They called it a ‘spectacular fusion of theatre and cinema’ which was a pretty true statement. The setting was the World War I and the screen was used as background for the bombing and pastoral scenes. It was very well done and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Three actors took the parts of over 20 people, some of whom only had a few words to say. The actors didn’t leave the stage at all. When they needed to ‘change hats’, they crouched quietly at the sides and changed the very basic props as they needed to. None of this fazed the audience but how different from years ago when the curtain was pulled between acts and scenes, and props were as authentic as you could make them. The photo is of my uncle who was in the Navy during World War I but was invalided out with sea-sickness.

Isn't there a song about a sea-sick sailor? Anyway, in the thumbnail pic it looks as if your uncle has horns...

I have to say that I prefer the "old days" than the actual way to play pieces at the theater. I suppose your uncle was not happy to be invalided out with sea-sickness. He as an awesome man.

@JudyEv That is something very annoying. My husband suffer with motion sickness on the sea, but on on the land or air.

The sea-sickness started to affect his balance so he was invalided out. He always suffered with motion sickness after that.

I wonder how unusual it was for what happened with your uncle to happen to others. The play sounds great!

I guess there were a few that couldn't handle being on a ship.

A lot of the scenes on the screen were taken with a drone. They seem an essential part of such theatre plays nowadays. Once there was just a fabric backdrop which might have been changed from scene to scene.

@judyev In church this morning the preacher “performed” his sermon against a projected (and relevant) backdrop. Not everyone was unfazed.

At least the backdrop was relevant. There is a time and place for some of these things.

We haven't been to a play for ages. Mostly they're quite expensive so we don't go to all that we'd like to.

A lot of the background stuff was shot with a drone. Drones are used for all sorts of things now.

That’s too bad about your uncle. Sea sickness is awful. Glad you enjoyed the theater.

It worked really well although if someone had told me how it would be tackled, I would have been wary of its success.

Thanks. He was a lovely man, a lot younger than my Mum. He used to sit on her knee as a little tacker and say 'can you feel the love hopping on?'.
