Q of the Day: Mother's Day Flower Power

Now, I'm not talking about the "hippies" flower power protests against the Vietnam War in the 1960's where peace and love was the message. No, I'm talking just plain "flowers," as in when you think of flowers what types of flowers come to mind as special and why? Another reason I have flowers on my mind is Mother's Day where it is a popular tradition to give some to your mom to celebrate the day. I would always buy my mom pansies for Mother's Day as she enjoyed putting them in her garden. Very colorful with those little flower faces staring at you. And with spring's arrival that's when I notice the flowers blooming and the ones which come to mind first for me are daffodils and tulips. My neighbor has rows of yellow tulips in their front lawn garden. And I have daffodils that come up in mine. Depending on your location and climate the types of flowers you notice in your neighborhood might influence the species you become fond of, or the first ones that comes to mind. So, let's put a nice-looking garden together with some of your colorful flower picks. What are your choices and any reason for you pick? And since it's Mother's Day (at least in the U.S.), do you (or did you) have any special traditions for mom on that day? Interesting Flower Facts- Did You Know: ***In Australia, to celebrate Mother's Day, it's Mums to Mum as chrysanthemums are a popular choice. ***Broccoli Is a Flower. Although I would not recommend you give her that for Mother's Day. ***Tulip bulbs were more valuable than gold in Holland in the 1600s. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

As my dear mother of blessed memory was allergic to flowers I never gave her any. There was a song I first heard by the Carter Family, called “Give Me the Roses While I Live.” That’s always what I tried to do with my mom. Punny joke: my favorite flower is Pillsbury self-rising.

An interesting choice! Interesting Flower Facts: In Britain, Queen Victoria loved flowers so much that she wore an orange floral wreath instead of the expected crown. Isn't that special...

@dgobucks226 We had trouble getting a photo of sunflowers when we were in France. They were always facing the wrong way.

I actually saw a commercial about that. Funny what can become valuable. Like baseball trading cards. If they are rare, they might be valuable. Interesting Flower Facts: In Japan, to celebrate Mother's Day, red carnations might be given to symbolize a mother's love and sacrifice. Sunflowers move throughout the day in response to the movement of the sun from east to west. Do you have a favorite flower you enjoy?

Orange tulips are my favorite flower, no doubt. My mom passed away nine years ago May 4th, but I do get my stepmom something. My sister got her flowers, but I got her a whitewashed squirrel holding a very thin vase. She has a fight on her hands keeping the squirrels out of her bird feeders, so I thought I’d make her laugh, and give her a place to put some of the flowers she has in her garden. Those squirrels cause her grief, but they sure are funny to watch.

Orange is a unique and really cool color choice. I sympathize with your stepmom. Those squirrels are relentless when it comes to grabbing a free meal. You just can't stop them. More Interesting Flower Facts: -In Thailand, to celebrate Mother's Day a gift of white jasmine flowers are given, which symbolize the purity of a mother’s love. -In Britain, Queen Victoria loved flowers so much that she wore an orange floral wreath instead of the expected crown.

About Australia: The traditional Mother's Day flower is Red Carnations. However, because Australia's Mother's Day date is in Autumnand Red Carnations are a spring flower, most people give White Chrysanthemums instead. You surely know that Tulip bulbs were the first speculative bubble in history. The tradition in Italy was to donate pink flowers to our Mothers, pink carnations, pink roses, or pink tulips were the most popular.

@dgobucks226 "Pink flowers" are associated to sweetness, gratitude. Red is for "lovers", white is the symbol of purity, you use white flowers for weddings and baptism. Yellow is great in the garden, but not a flower you buy for someone, it means jealousy.

I see about Australia. Makes sense I surely did know that about tulips but not everyone is as informed as you and I. Thanks for the addition about Italy. Curious: Did the color pink represent some symbolism?

Yes, can you believe broccoli is a flower! Go figure. Some flowers are edible, but I would never think of broccoli being one. Yes, tulips really stand out and have a terrific assortment of colors. Ahhh yes, flowers. I don't have lots of flowers here but I do have hollyhocks right now and hopefully I can get some sunflowers to grow. Later this year my trumpet vine will blossom. I don't have any cacti growin in my yard cuz of Roscoe but I'm thinking of maybe getting a couple yuccas, the only problem with those is that they attract aphids.

@dgobucks226 It is very difficult to know which flower is her favorite, I hink she loves all kind of flowers. Carnations are popular in Portugal because it is linked to the revolution, when we start to have a democracy.
