Western Australia will introduce new laws against carrying weapons

The photo has nothing to do with the discussion. I just like it. I’ve mentioned in comments a few times that, although Australia doesn’t have the gun culture that America does, we do seem to be having more and more knife attacks. I must have been right as our West Australian government is to introduce tough new laws, allowing officers to scan people in any public place, whether or not they’re suspected of having a weapon. Hand-held metal detectors would be used to detect hidden knives. Juveniles found with a bladed weapon will receive harsher penalties and risk referral to a juvenile justice team. Of course, there are arguments against this, some saying it will lead to racial profiling, and targeting, whether consciously or not, of minority groups. It’s pretty sad that it has come to this but so many knife attacks aren’t good either.

I'm reminded of that scene in Crocodile Dundee...

I am glad that they do this. There are rules about knives here in Europe, the blade must be no more than 8 cm if I remember well. We need those laws.

@JudyEv People want "freedom", but then they blame the police when there are accidents. We cannot have both and safety is more important than total freedom.

@LadyDuck That's true and if you don't do the wrong thing, you have nothing to worry about.

Some are arguing against it but how else can you stop knife attacks?

I am for ban, though how effective it could be remains to be seen. I do carry a swiss knife, to ensure that I can cut at least an apple. LOL

I think it still has to be passed in parliament but I'm guessing it will go through.

Yes, I have seen an increase of knife attacks across the world. Scanning anyone will come with repercussions I'm sure. Have a good day and a good weekend.

I think when people start claiming racial profiling because authorities want to protect the public that it seems to point to particular ethnic groups being more prone to carry dangerous knives. In my opinion any teen no matter what ethnic groups could be more prone to carrying weapons than most adults. But I also don't believe that all teens would do so.

There are alot of knife crimes commited here also-too many. I think that handguns should be outlawed, they are here. It is safer as nobody 'needs' to protect themselves to that point.

I agree. I don't feel any need to have any sort of weapon. Touch wood. But knife violence is rising here and what can you do about it? At least they're trying to get a handle on it.

That is scary that the police can do that...Doesn't make people want to be any where Near a cop. Gives too much power to the police. I have a Swiss Army knife I carry all the time, and I know they aren't very big, but they can still do some harm. But it also comes in handy when you need a screw driver, or bottle opener etc. So glad I live in a country that believes in Freedoms...though the Elites sure are trying to take more and more of them away. I hope my friend who makes hand made Knives doesn't go out of buisiness. He lives in Australia.
