While we get to relax, early morning storms roared through Dallas, Texas today. I heard from my friend who lives there, and she said they had to spend an hour in the tornado shelter where she works. I’m glad she’s safe. Whether you’re enjoying lovely weather (like we are) or dodging snow (poor Montana mountains), here’s a classic song to brighten your day…that’s now 50 years old. #4: I Will Always Love You - Dolly Parton I hope I don’t have to say “Linda? NO!!!!!!” for this one. If you have only heard that scream-a-thon vocal gymnastic piece of crap from Whitney Houston, do yourself a favor and listen to the real deal. Dolly and Porter. Porter and Dolly. They were a dynamite duo. And their relationship was a powder keg. It was to the point where Dolly wouldn’t appear on the Opry when Porter was there…and Porter was usually there. They did reconcile: Parton celebrated Wagoner’s 50th anniversary on the Opry in 2005; and, when he was dying of lung cancer, she made visits to his hospital room. While we’ll probably never know the total truth (as I frequently quote that line from a Don Henley song, “There’s three sides to every story, there’s yours and there’s mine, and the cold hard truth”), Parton made it abundantly clear in this song that she was eternally grateful for Wagoner’s help (she replaced “pretty miss Norma Jean” on Wagoner’s syndicated TV show, which is how her stardom took off). And I will always love Dolly’s song…as long as Dolly’s singing it. I Will Always Love You Written by Dolly Parton Recorded by Dolly Parton From Jolene, 1973 I’ll think of you each step of the way:

Wikipedia says there were over 160 tornadoes last week. If that is confirmed by the National Weather Service, that’s mind-boggling.

@Marilynda1225 — we had a fatality here that was NOT related to a tornado (high wind blew a tree down and it hit a man). People need to realize that “severe weather” is more than a tornado.

@FourWalls that is mind boggling if that number is correct t. Our news has been showing the devastating results of many of those tornadoes. I think about all the myLotters living in that part if the country.

@NJChicaa — and I think I’ve had a good day if I can find my slippers when I swing my feet over the side of the bed in the morning.

@FourWalls I've read a few times over the years that Dolly wrote both this song and "Jolene" in the same day

@CaptAlbertWhisker — I grew up watching her every Saturday afternoon on Porter Wagoner’s TV show. Named one of my cars after one of her songs, “Joshua.”

Age has its privileges, so I grew up with Dolly’s rendition.

“There’s three sides to every story, there’s yours and there’s mine, and the cold hard truth” I like to listen to few songs whatever she said sounds considerate, true for me now.

That’s not a Dolly line, it’s a Don Henley line. One of my favorite Dolly lines (not in a song, though) is, “I don’t get offended if someone calls me a dumb blonde. I know I’m not dumb. I also know I’m not blonde.”

I like Whitney’s a lot, but I love the simplicity of Dolly’s version.

I think that’s why I love the older country music more…so simple.

I totally agree. It made me mad when I heard Huston sing it. What a mess! The way Dolly sings it sounds real.

Whitney could sing, so I don’t know who convinced her to do the theatrical approach to singing. Ruins so many songs.

@FourWalls ......Yes, it does. My boyfriend at the time had one of her tapes and we would listen to it. She is good just not the way she wanted to do that song. I'm such a fan of Dolly's no one could out do her anyway.
