A dramatic rise in domestic violence deaths in our state

I don’t know what is happening in our state (Western Australia) but we are now have the highest number of women killed in Australia this year. I’m talking about domestic violence figures. Australia-wide, 35 women have been murdered this year. New South Wales (NSW) recorded the most with 11. Western Australia, which has about a third of the population of NSW, had 9, which is disproportionately high. Despite our gun laws, some women were shot by men with licensed firearms. Others were stabbed. Restraining orders are regularly disregarded and many women complain of not being taken seriously when they report their fears to police. I wonder where it will all stop. The photo is of a bush track.

Whatever the numbers, it's always too many. Our numbers must seem small to you.

@JudyEv Any amount of murder is bad. But yeah your numbers are small. We had three shark attacks today, within four miles.

It is the drinks I think. And lack of employment, and insecurities ..both financial and emotional/social. Men do not express as well as we women do.

@vandana7 I Have worked wit some pretty angry women in Early Childhood Education. Some displace their anger on the children around them.

Why would you care Pony ji? It is mostly women who are subjected to domestic violence.

Men are just stepped in a culture of violence from a young age. We have to break the pattern to save women and men alike.

The movies, the comics, and literature....the very image of being macho.......... is associated with violence. We women are easy targets.........being fragile by nature...

For me, sports and outdoor activities (even shooting) allowed me to be a "macho man" without being mean to people.

That's true. Young men need mentors and better education I think and maybe in communication skills so they don't just lash out in anger.

@JudyEv Wonder why men resort to it, knowing fully well that forensics are no longer archaic, and they will be caught sooner or later.

Way back when I was in High School in my sociology class we talked about rising temperatures causing more violent crimes. I just realized you are in winter, though, so that is not causing it. Extra stressors of any kind tend to make people turn angry and violent, but it sounds as if the targets are mostly women. Sad to hear.

Numbers went up during covid shutdown but that can't be the reasonn either. That's interesting about rising temperatures causing more violent crimes. I hadn't heard that theory before. Did they say if it was theory or fact?

That is sad to hear. We live in a stressful world these days though, and I think the evil or unwell among us are more prone to violence especially when they have access to a weapon.

I agree. How can this type of violence be stopped? It would be incredibly difficult. The police can't do much about prevention without evidence of some sort.

It's heartbreaking to hear about the rise in domestic violence cases in Western Australia and across the country. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. It's crucial that we continue to raise awareness and push for stronger protective measures and support systems for those at risk. Let's hope for a future where everyone feels safe and heard.

@JudyEv You're absolutely right, Judy. It's encouraging to see groups advocating for change. Hopefully, their efforts will lead to better protection and support for those in need.

That's awful. I wish there was a way for women to go in to hiding when they are abused the first time. So many give their husband another chance. I know, if my husband abused me the first time, that would be it. I would disappear.

Some find it hard to leave for many reasons. The husband usually has control of the finances; might threaten to harm kids/pets. Having several young children would make it hard to leave too.

There was a dramatic rise here in the Caribbean during covid. Couples were forced to spend more time in each other's company and that was not good for already fragile relationships. Children suffered as well. I suppose it was the same globally.

The isolation during covid did cause a lot of trauma and upset but it doesn't really explain why there has been such a increase lately.

Restraining orders don't do any good here either most times. In fact many police recommend against them as they can do less if you have one.

Your photo reminds me of a movie setting. Do the police need more training? That is deeply troubling about your domestic violence situation.

Women go to the police but, unless they have some sort of proof to go on, they won't do anything. It's a difficult situation all round.
