Just a Wild Sunflower

I have been waiting on this plant to bloom to see what it was. I have put the photo as it was growing into Google Lens and got several identifications and they were all wrong! Turns out to be a wild sunflower! It just popped up close to the chicken coop. And man is it tall! That photo was taken from a distance to get the entire height in the photo. How do you like my wildflower find? I'm glad I didn't let the hubby cut it down! Photo Credit: My own

They do grow tall. We used to grow them out by the garage. They would grow up to the roof.

@celticeagle Yes, sunflower seeds were a big deal back in the 70's and 80's!

That is awesome! We've got a little tiny sunflower plant that is popping up in a pot that we planted from a seed. I can't wait until it gets big enough to produce a flower! A few years ago I had a wild sunflower pop up next to the A/C unit in the back of my house. I had a feeling the seed came from some birdseed that our neighbor had put out in his feeder.

I may plant some sunflower seeds of different kinds in the area we used as the cucumber patch last year.

@moffittjc The area where this one is is partially shaded. It only gets the morning sunshine!

@kareng My problem is that I don't have enough yard with full sunlight to properly grow sunflower seeds. My yard is heavily shaded from all the huge trees on my property.

That sunflower was certainly heading for the sky, wasn't it? My mum would always let a rogue plant grow until she found out what it was.

Lots of things here can be used in herbal remedies. I like to look them all up and read what they were used for back in the 1800's. I'm sure the lady of the house back then had a great garden of herbal plants just for those reasons.

@JudyEv So true! Very few people are interested in them anymore. It's really a shame.

@kareng As a general rule of thumb the wild varieties tend to be more robust. I guess it holds true for sunflowers

I love sunflowers. I remember them next to the drive of our house in Cleveland. We used to stand there and eat the seeds before the birds got them. Have a good new week.

Yes, and we have also had strong winds this Spring. But birds and squirrels in the nearby woods also could carry them.

Thank you, although Mother Nature gets all the credit on this one. My hubby did good on weed eating today and let it alone! He even commented this afternoon that he didn't realize that was a sunflower growing there! There may be some hope for him yet!!
